Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Are Dogue De Bordeauxs fussy eaters?
- By Davemac [us] Date 22.12.08 15:19 UTC
Hi. I have been interested in this breed for some time now but have heard from a couple of owners that they can be very fussy eaters at times. As a GSD owner I know how annoying this trait can be and would like to hear from any DDB owners if they have experienced this with their breed and how bad it can be. Would they rate as highly in the fussy eating stakes say as GSDs as our current bitch used to go days at a time turning her nose up at food although she's not quite as bad now in her older age? Also, do they tend to fare better on dry, complete food or a more natural diet?

Hi Davemac

It's not unknown for DDBs to be fussy eaters from time to time. One of ours was often fussy following a season, although nothing like 'days at a time'. I must say now that they're all on raw food she does a lot better and all of them are pretty enthusiastic at meal times these days. Not sure how they compare with GSDs though. A plus point: grooming time is comparatively quick :-)

hi there ive found our ddb fares better on dry(arden grange) with tripe mixed in.he holds his weight better than with just the dry.we asked loads of ddb folk at shows about this before we put him on tripe and the general consensus was most use tripe for keeping the weight on.also our boy will miss the odd meal, but after being strict(walk away from the food ,you lose it) hes learnt to eat whats put in front of him.hope this helps, roy.

Thanks guys for the advice. That doesn't sound so bad and I've experience with feeding tripe having owned GSDs :-)
