Topic Dog Boards / Health / Vet Prescription Charges

i just rang up the vets today to ask for a tube of cream  or a priscipton for the tube of cream to get on line,

did you all know that the vets can charge £15 for the priscipton now as the law as once again change in oct 2008 so the vet now dont have to just write it for free.

I don't think it is necessarily £15 pounds.  The BVA have given out guidance but they say it is a business decision for each practice so some may charge more and some less.

The exact charge is up to the vet.

The robbing so and so's, but there again they will be losing out on business so of course they are going to rip us off.  It's about time that they charged a more reasonable fee for prescriptive medicines because at the moment it's way over the top.  Bet not many vets are feeling the credit crunch, I know that mine has just bought a new surgery and with where it is and the size I doubt it was cheap either!

Ah, a vet with the wisdom to invest rather than rub along in ageing premises (which are more expensive to maintain) with ageing equipment (which doesn't work as well). ;-)

He's not spending it on himself is he :-)
£15 is about what you pay for a private prescription for travel stuff from a doctor.

I know it is easy to feel like this, but vets have to live too!  They are a business after all, I know last time this subject came up, I commented that buying meds elsewhere, could have a negative effect. If they don't make a charge for providing the paper scrip, I imagine income will be generated by higher consultation fees. Investment in the practice, is of benefit to all concerned, surely?

I am very fortunate to have a vet who keeps his fees as reasonable as possible- therefore I am able to support him by purchasing meds, wormers etc from him.

Umm no he still has all of his other surgeries, so credit crunch definitely isn't doing him any harm.

Still can't complain as he did let me have the bloods taken for Lana at a cheaper rate than I was expecting.

my vet charges £6 perscription charge.
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 23.01.09 14:10 UTC
My vets charge £6.65 for any prescription, written or drugs dispensed, as it is more of a fee to take into account the time taken to take the order, check the history and dispense or write the prescription.
