Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Help Please... Barking and then some!

Hello,

Bit of a strange one for me, not too sure how I approach it.
My pup who is 9 months now doesnt like me leaving him.

If I go out - sometimes- he barks, but when he starts to bark- he doesnt stop!

I assumed he barked for about twenty minutes, got bored and went to sleep- but I just had a note through my door from my neighbour (why she didnt just ring the bell I dont know?!) saying that when I am out he barks constantly, and she cant hear her tv- she said last night- that I was out from 6-9pm and he barked constantly and could I maybe train him -

I never go out evenings and leave him- in the daytime I do.. for an hour or two, but I never knew he barked like that? She is a bit of a strange one herself, not very sociable but still...

How am I supposed to stop a dog barking when I am not here? I rarely go out in evenings _VERY RARELY but even in the daytime, I dont like the thought of him barking but what can I, or should I do?
Im sure it cant be nice for my pup to be sat there howling for an hour so its as much for him....

What can I do?

she was probably embarrassed to complain or worried about a confrontation. i'd go and apologise and tell her you appreciate being told and that you'll work on it. i'd also ask that she let you know if it continues as then you'll know whats working and keep your neighbour sweet :)

have you tried:

Stuffed kongs (for occupying bored minds and tiring them out)

DAP (dog appeasing phereomone) diffusers (expensive but since i set up tios he's been pretty chilled)

hiding things for him to find (toys, treats etc)

leaving the tv/radio on (a silent room can get pretty unpleasent for a person let alone a puppy)

HTH :)

I have tried the Tv, infact I leave it on as loud as poss so it drowns out any outside noise,
What is DAP? Can you explain that a little more?

Its a strange one- I really dont like him barking- more for his sake than the neighbours but how to tackle it is so random to me

bitches release a pheromone during labour- i think to keep the pups calm during whats a pretty nasty process lol. they ahve managed to re-produce this and put it in basically a glade plug in. you can also get collers and spray for bedding etc. i got one from PAH for £28 but you can probably get it cheaper online. basically it helps chill them out. there is lots on the internet.

i also got tio a suppliment to calm him down (he has fear aggression issues) but he doesn't like the taste so thinking of getting rescue remedy (anyone know if this works for dogs? i heard it did)

a well stuffed kong will occupy him for a bit to

I use the radio on talking station, bach flower remedies (available from chemist), Dap difuser, Kong and sometimes skullcap and valerian tabs if around fire works time etc. All are worth ago. For Bach it depends why he is barking but if your not sure then you could start with adding few drops of the rescue remedy to his water.

Wish you luck with it all though as must be very stressful for all concerned

I leave a VOICE ACTIVATED  Tape Recorder on when I go out for my pup.  That way I know if she barks/howls, how long for and what is likely to start her off ;)   I can't leave her loose with the others as she was destroying things so she has to be crated.  I leave the other dog's bed next to her crate, the TV on and give her a run before going out.  I've also been getting her used to just going in there in the day and then I go out for a few minutes and come back in - no fuss ;) and then she's let out.  We've been building up slowly and it seems to be working as the recorder isn't being activated any more while we're out :-D
