There is a virus going around in my area it is hitting everyone. My self included.
At my company out of site based staff of 28 we have 5 off at the moment.

It starts with blinding headache and cold/flu systems, peaking at day 5 - 6 with bad throat and ears and fevers. By day 10 - 12 most people are recovering(according to my doc who I phoned for advice). I am on day 6 my family are enjoying me having lost my voice. I can not remember the last time I took time off work though, I have been off all week, I feel quite a whimp!

Is any one else suffering?

Getting it out the way for Xmas anyway..

My husband has had 2 bouts of this over the last couple of months.. still having probs with the ear infection bit and his sinuses..
I've been necking the echinacea like mad, and had a bit of a sore throat last week but it amounted to nothing.. this week I have felt a bit listless and nasally, but so far nothing major..
Hoping I can fight it off!!!!

Ugh sounds like an awful virus, we have had a sickness bug in our work wih everyone dropping like flies, lasts about a 5 days. I have shingles just now, have never felt so ill and didn't take time off last week when my blisters were out (on my face eek!!) but have had to take time off today as I feel so knacked. didn't wake up till 12 today, can't believe it I am usually up at 5.45 with Millsy and then on the go all day. I know how you feel but if you don't rest you could do yourself more damage. Listen to me who went to work last week like an idiot :-D. Hope you feel better soon.

I had to rescue the secretary at work this week. I used the loo and heard a voice from the other cubicle asking for help!
She had the dreaded D&V.......
She rang her partner on her mobile which I retrieved, he came and collected her along with clean clothes, and I went for bowl and wipes and stuff...........
Thought that must be your worst nightmare.......

There is a flu like virus here too.

I had a terrible throat, lost voice, hacking cough for 3 weeks, and was bloody miserable with it, then my gland were so swollen, I couldnt swallow, phoned the doc for advice and he said its doing the rounds, just take plenty fluids and asprin, and gargled with tcp or salty water.
- By sandra [gb] Date 11.12.08 13:32 UTC
OMG poloaussie now that is your worst nightmare, how awful. One thing I have noticed is when there is a virus going around it is always the same people who struggle into work cause they hate being off and the same people who pretend to be ill to have a few days off. :-)))
- By crinklecut [gb] Date 11.12.08 14:05 UTC
I have had this rotten virus for nearly two months now. I just can't seem to shift it. Just when I think I may be on the mend I get hit with another dose.
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 11.12.08 18:26 UTC
I have it at the moment, not nice. I have worked 9 years at this company and have never had to put a sick note in until now.
- By melster122 Date 11.12.08 18:58 UTC
I have had a cold like virus for over 3 weeks and am finally on antibiotics as I feel horrific.  In the middle of it I had the sickness and tummy bug.  Can't wait to feel better.

my two and half year old grandaughter collapsed and stopped breathing, the ambulance came within it seemed like seconds, and they had to ressucitate her twice in the ambulance she was kept in over night and most of the next day, but they said it was just the virus that has been hitting everyone, she is now deaf and lost her voice and is getting angry as she does not understand what is happening to her, she is on antibiotics and i went to see her tonight and as i walked in she said in such a croaky little voice
nanny woof woof cuggle  peese  and that was the first words in a couple of days she had said, she went off to sleep with one of my dogs in her bed with her and i am going back to pick them both up tomorrow give her mum some time to herself

I've had the trot thing too :( , only good thing to come out of it (pardon the expression) is that I've lost half a stone :) this means of course that after Chrimbo I will be back to my old rounder self!!
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 12.12.08 16:00 UTC
Poor little darling. Stopped me feeling so sorry for myself.
Hope she is soon better.
Lots of Nanny love and doggie cuddles should help her no end ;-)

I have had lots of doggie cuddles this week works for me..
- By judgedredd [gb] Date 12.12.08 16:16 UTC
had her today, i now need the rest she has gone back , she was still not her normal self, but she did want to go walks with the dogs, so wellies and wrapped up we only went around the block and kicked the leaves but that tired her out, she had a snooze with three of the dogs on the sofa with her, and then i could hear some chattering and she was letting the old girl lick her nose for her, i said use a hanky but she just giggled.
when we took her back she fell asleep in the car, then she walked up the path to home we had a drink there with her and her mum and her great grandma and you could tell she was flagging again, she has say 10 mins of activity and then 20 mins of wanting a cuddle and then she starts crying for no reason she does not want touched or cuddled, she would go and sit in the dogs cage with one of them and shut the door and sniff into there coats and then out she would come again, it was brilliant to watch my pack with her, as usually she runs up the path, into the middle of them all hugging and kissing them, and then they play ball and chase each other roll around on the floor, but today they where very quite around her, gentle just followed her around putting their heads on her lap, and of course cleaning the odd snot that had escaped my clutches, yuk,
i will not see her now for about three days but her mother is only at the end of a phone if she needs me.

She must be feeling really ill wee soul, not knowing what to do with herself, that's fantastic with the dogs, they are protecting her. Hopefully she will get better day by day.

Ahh bless her, I think its awful when the little one's are ill but it sounds like she's on the mend now and has the dogs to help!

We've been hit with the virus...I woke up feeling awful yesterday and it was a nightmare as I had to drive my dog to a specialist for his cruciate op.  So while i'm feeling ill i've got my Rottie boy on day 1 after his op needing extra care...my mum and sis also have the same illness so not good!!!  I was hoping i'd be feeling alot better by tomorrow but by the sounds of it no-one is getting better that quick.

> my two and half year old grandaughter collapsed and stopped breathing,

Carolann, thats just terrible, thank god the ambulance was quick. You must of been out of your mind with worry. I am soooo glad she is on the mend. Puts it all into perspective, its gone right through my family, starting with OH then the girls and finally me. None affected as serious as your granddaughter though just rather quiet in the house through lost voices!!!

I feel quite a whimp!

Oh gosh don't !

My whole family had this at the beginning of the year and funnily enough it affected myself and my oldest son the worst, we're the ones who both very rarely catch colds etc, but this one got us both really bad, the headaches lasted for about 3 days, never in my life have I had headaches like it, the pain was horrendous.

I'm one of those people who are very rarely ill, I never take pills, never complain always get out of bed and just carry on, but I was in such pain I was driven to take some headache pills  not that they helped, I couldn't even drive, (I have real sympathy for those who suffer from migranes, always imagined what it must feel like, but boy if it is even worse than that, I don't know how you go on.)

Didn't loose my voice, I went to the doctor 3 weeks later as I was still feeling drained and the virus was still in my blood (according to the doc) so it is a bad one.

However we all fully recovered and have missed out on catching all the regular colds again, with having wee nephews and nieces it is easy to catch them, but, does not appear to have affected my immune system, it must have been a really potent virus.

So if you've got it, you can keep it. :-D Even I can't fight that one off.  Hope that it doesn't come my way again.

Sending Get well soon wishes to all who are unfortunate enough to get it, it really is a horrible virus.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 15.12.08 09:21 UTC
Just back today I had two days in bed, which for me is unheard of. I walked Whistler for about 15 minutes this morning on the way to work and Ive had to change my shirt as Im soaking wet, now I have the air con on hot and Im freezing its my 5th day.
This weekend was a waste of space thank goodness OH could walk both dogs taking Whistler to work for me as well. I just read about 4 books and slept, now all the decongestant stuff has upset my stomache. It is a real bad one this time we have about 4 off this week so far.
The headache is the worse, Im also not eating much. Good thing was OH went off to see his Mum and I had a v. large Border draped accross my lap and a cocker at my feet - no need for central heating in our house and we all went to sleep!! Got a knock at the door and.... my nephew from NZ there!! He could not get his Dad on the phone, did not know my number so he and his OH had walked from Winchester Station with three suitcases (about 3 miles) they had changed their flight to avoid Bangcock ?? (no idea how you spell it) so came in via Singapore a day early. Took him to his Dad's and felt well enough to put up the tree. Missed being on CD's so im catching up. But still feel really weak, and wobbly.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 15.12.08 09:23 UTC
See Dogs are as good as Doctors with my two on my lap I felt so warm and comforted I slept like a log.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 15.12.08 09:24 UTC
Its awful really but try and drink a lot as well -not brandy!!- I think some of the bad head is dehydration.

Well I went back to work, my boss came into see if I was ok and sent me straight home again.
I have to say getting up and dressed, I did not even cycle as I would normally, absolutley did me in.  I am back at home on the sofa with my 2 furry hot water bottles, they are  quite enjoying the company I think ;-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 15.12.08 13:24 UTC
I am just getting over this now, been off work all last week, came in on the Monday and decided enough was enough, so rested all week and my ears are still a bit sore and my throat is still a bit coughy but much better than i was, had hot and cold sweats when i ate too, been on soup for days!! Only just getting back onto hard food now. It really drains you and when i went docs he just gave my tablets to take and said it should clear in a few days
- By Reesy [gb] Date 15.12.08 14:37 UTC
I've had for over a week now, lost my voice two days ago. It's driving me crazy.
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 19.12.08 23:45 UTC
I can not believe it went to visit Mum in the rehabilitation centre. First time in two weeks I have been able to get to her because of me being ill,... I had to call a nurse to her as Mum was shivering and shaking and complaining of a headache. I sat with her until 21.00 then had to come home to see to dogs.My sisters arrived as I left. They have just phoned to say they have called a doc out to her.
If she gets it anything like the rest of us...
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 21.12.08 03:21 UTC
She is in hospital. They are not sure if she has had a serious of TITs(??mini srtokes MRI will done), or if the virus is doing the damage.
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 21.12.08 08:42 UTC
Oh your poor mum :-( Will be thinking of you as I cough and sneeze through today.

I hope she gets better soon, and that the docs find nothing worrying.
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 21.12.08 18:17 UTC Edited 21.12.08 18:19 UTC
Test show that she had a heart attack and then had another in the night, though mild she will be kept where she is on HDU for now.. My mum has a dalmatian toy (which my kids bought her), that has follwed her all over the place we jokingly said we would bring our dogs in to see her, we got a huge lecture about germs from a nearby nurse. It was quite bizarre as I am not sure if she was joking realising I was, or if she was serious and did not realise I was joking ,, confused.
Mum is in the best place any how and being very well looked after.
- By sandra [gb] Date 21.12.08 18:36 UTC
Hi bilbobaggins, I hope your Mum is doing well tonight as you say she is in the best place. The nurse probably thought you were serious, My big sis is a nurse and they get lots of requests especially about pets, I know you would never think about taking them in but wouldn't that be amazing if you could. I would love nothing more than to have my boy visit if I was ill and I bet she would too.

I am a retired Nurse, I go into a private Hospital for treatment(which I seem to need a lot of!) Derek brings in the dogs for me to see! If I were in charge I would let them in!(in moderation of course, otherwise it would be like Hall4/5 from Crufts!) Far more germs in uncleaned wards in my humble opinion! The germs or 'pathogens' from animals are usually harmless to humans and anyway if you live with your animals all the time, if they had anything you COULD catch, then you would have it already! The psychological benefits from having your pets visit far outweigh the downs!

I've had this flu for around 2 months, even after having my flu jab, just when you think it's starting to clear up, it hits you again!
