Topic Other Boards / Foo / Dabs Digital Radio??

Any thoughts on reliabilty of Dabs digital radios? We bought a Pure Evoke 2 about 4 years ago but have never really used it (no suitable socket/position in kitchen). Yesterday I finally rearranged kitchen to fit it in. Today the radio stopped working and smells of burning. We had power cut just prior to radio giving up so it may have been fried by a power surge.

As the original radio was expensive I am in two minds about buying another one.

I've had  Pure digital radio in daily use in my kitchen for about 2 years and had no bother with it at all.  We bought OH's mother a cheaper brand last year and she's had no trouble with it either.

I think your theory that it was fried by a power surge may be correct...same thing happened to my Dad's telly a few years ago.

Mine broke after about 6 months, never bothered to replace it -found it very unreliable all told......

I seem to recall reading something about a new version of DABS radio (DABS + according to Wikipedia) and I don't think the original Dabs radios were going to work with it unless modified.

I won a digital radio (Pure Evoke-1) in a radio competition 4 years ago. It's been working fine in my kitchen ever since.

Does anyone know are they going to turn off normal radio signals in the future as they are with TV?

Is DABS + like sky + where  you can press a button and record if interrupted?  That is what attracts me about a DAB radio - the ability to put a programme on hold.  I haven't bothered to rush out to buy one because I listen to radio in the car mostly and then use the computer to play again if I miss something.  However ideally sitting in front of the computer isn't very relaxing if one wants to listen to some music or a play.   I think they are planning to cut the analogue signal on radio as well.  I think it will take longer than they say.  Don't know how digital radio is affected by weather but we loose all digital TV signal when it snows or rains heavily.  What use is that?

Yesterday, my OH got our son a new music centre for his room with a DAB radio, I switched it on and its fantastic, I had not thought of getting one really but its on my list now. It was so clear and as Ben said "like listening to a CD quality".

That was what really put me off mine even before it broke. Frequently (and I do mean frequently, like ten times a day or so) it would lose signal and shut down. True, we live in a fairly remote area, but even so -we should be able to get digital radio according to the official websites where you can check with your postcode.

I have a Pure Eco something or other and it is very good, however, it conked out but within the warranty and was replaced by the supplier.  However, I was very impressed with Pure's Customer Service.

I too have bad reception and on one particular local radio station I get what sounds like frying eggs interferring with the sound, but then Chelmsford is renowned for having TV and radio reception problems.  Funny when you consider it's the birthplace of radio - lol.
