I am trying to get something off Ebay and last time I missed out by 5pence.

Auction Sniper has never failed me yet :-) If you sign up you get a few free 'trial' snipes.  I usually set it to place my highest bid in the last 20 seconds or so.

I use auction sentry, when I bought it a couple of years ago it was a one off fee of around a fiver. Now I see they're charging about a fiver a year. You could always just keep downloading the trial version and making up endless new free email accounts to register :-)
