Last winter my ridgeback got dry sore cracked edges to the lower edges of his ears. i tried things like vaseline etc but didn't really help. He then made it worse by scratching and managed to split his ear. £170 worth of stiches at the vet later it seemed to go away! However i've noticed its come back again - this time on the other ear. The edge tips of his ears are a bit swollen and scabby. Can anyone recommend any cream for this sort of thing. As i say i've tried vaseline and also ExmaRid ( a cream containing Cade oil which apparently is a natural alternative to coal tar which is also antibacterial. Just wondered if anyone could suggest anything that had worked for them. Maybe he needs ear muffs!
Thanks

How about a snood and bring it right up over his ears.....

vaselines better as a preventative than a fix for broken skin- it doesn't actually moisturise. perhaps something like E45 might be better?

Try Sudocreme - cheap and usually works on minor irritations and scratches etc. ;) It's also a barrier cream and should help to moisturise the skin too ;) I always have a small tub in the dog's box :-)
Thanks everyone. I will get along to boots tomorrow. its started bleeding today - just in one tiny spot and only on one ear. In the absence of a snood, I've made him a hairnet from an old pair of tights!! He's not massively impressed funnily enough - neither was the other half when i said he would also have to walk him in it! Fingers crossed some E45 or sudocreme will help. Thanks again every one for your suggestions. x

Hi Winston, I've just ordered some shampoo from Camrosa and got some ointment in the kit. I'm using it now on one of our dogs who often gets a dry cracked nose. E45 hasn't helped in the past, but this looks quite hopeful. Early days yet though. Best of luck with your ridgeback.
