Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Does anyone here give chicken wings to CKCS?
- By luvhandles Date 23.11.08 12:48 UTC
Hi,
After reading another post on teeth cleaning, I am seriously thinking of trying my boys with the odd chicken wing.
What I would like to know is:
1. Would you class them as being safe for a CKCS - what is the risk of choking, bones piercing the digestive tract etc?
2. At the moment they are both on 80g of dry food per day, if I fed them a chicken wing, by what ratio would I reduce the dry?
3. If they like them, how many times per week is it ok to feed chicken wings?

I had hold of a pack at the supermarket yesterday but I thought I would get some advice first.

Thanks in advance

Hi I guess you are worried about feeding chicken wings cos of the size of your dog. Well I feed them quite often to my Tibetan Spaniel, who is smaller than your dog and she loves them. As long as they are raw they will be quite O.K to feed . Not sure about quantities, but mine has just one chicken wing instead of her evening meal, she is fed twice a day. HTH

Hi Hayley

to give you an idea of how easily crunched, swallowed and digested they are, my pups (a LOT smaller than an adult CKC) were eating them easily at 4 weeks and my latest pup had moved onto thighs by 6 weeks :)

Supervise in case of gulping.  If you feed twice a day and only intending to do this now and again then I'd suggest substitute two smallish wings for one meal.  If you notice an increase or decrease in weight however, reduce or increase number of wings accordingly :)

TBH, if you're doing this with the sole purpose of keeping teeth plaque free then I'd give a small wing as a extra snack say 2 or 3 times a week rather than as a substitute for a meal.   With you having a smaller breed than mine then perhaps if you feed treats/dog biscuits/pigs ears etc substitute these for the wings rather than radically messing around with diet or alternatively give regular access to a large raw knuckle bone for gnawing on rather than eating :)

regards, Teri

Ditto that :-)

Cavaliers are the most pathetic little tots but when they get to about 12 weeks they will give a chicken wing a good go!
Mine love raw wings but unfortunately with a full coat they get very 'chickenified' and are notorious ear suckers/chewers...so if your dog is in full coat,a snood is advisable.

I dont 'do' weight when it comes to feeding my dogs, their condition is being constantly assessed and I feed accordingly.

Yes, we are regular snood users.....Thanks to everyone for answering my questions, I will buy some in tomorrow and let you know how we get on.

well.......finally bought some chicken wings and gave them one each. Alfie ate his in about 2 mins - I had to keep pulling in out of his mouth because he was trying to swallow it and kept gagging. He did give it a crunch and a chew but kind of swallowed it in one piece without tearing bits off if that makes sense - he was so fast that I couldn't grab it to stop him swallowing it, he's such a gannot. Harvey is still tackling his wing and I've now had to put Alfie in the crate to stop him trying to steal it. Will Alfie be ok eating it so fast? Also, I've just thought - should I have took the skin off first because I didn't - oh gosh I hope not.

Feed raw wings to all the Papillons, they love them so much and there has never been a problem with them eating them at all.

Papillon, do you leave the skin on and do your dogs chew then up nicely or wolf them down?

My cocker swallows hers whole after a few crunches to make it more flexible :-)  Sometimes she brings it up again to enjoy the process a little more.  I don't think it would be possible to skin them would it?  I certainly don't bother.

The novelty will wear off a little I think, he probably thought it was a mistake and he'd better be quick before you changed your mind :-)

I give the wings as they are, they love the skin and chomp the bones in no time, try them, your dogs will love you for it :-)
