how do i get my 7 year old male cat (simba) to live with my 8 week old puppy with out upsetting him(simba).
I would like them to get along, but not be best friends.
All i want is for them both to live under the same roof.
My puppy was brought up with a cat at the breeders house.
but simba has never had a puppy or dog around before any advice would be a great start.

when we got our 2nd kitten(already had one cat) they didnt exactly hit it off, we were told to leave them in a room together over night to get to know each other......BIG mistake.....in the morning all the carpet around the door had been pulled up and they still were not very friendly.....We didnt really use a technique to get them used to each other they just kinda got used to the fact that they would be living with each other....They still aren't the best of friends but they get along well enough...Sorry i couldnt be of more help

try rubbing some tuna on the puppy so the cat can lick it off
i heard this works a treat for introducing two cats together
cover each cat in tuna paste or oil or whatever and let them lick it off each other (after leaving them in a room together)
may be a bit smelly but apparently does work quite quickly

Like Pink Retro I have no technique to offer. All we did when introducing our puppy was to let them get on with it, allowing the cat to discipline Jerry if she saw fit (obviously this did not involve claws as this could easily end in disaster - I have a good natured cat). Jerry is not allowed to chase the cat or eat her food. They now get on fine and the funniest thing is watching Shania walk underneath Jerry!

i have two cats, one particularly neurotic, neither of whom had lived with a dog before we got Buffy, one is 7, the other 14. The older one ignores the dog (and puppies now) but the neurotic younger one who threatened to leave home when Buffy arrived now sleeps curled up with her in her bed. Time sorts out most problems and my advice is to let them get used to each other and not try to push it, watch out for those claws though! A cold kitchen at night helps too!

I had the same problem with my 2 year old cat when introducing her to my pup. I was lucky as my breed are very small and the cat was bigger than the pup to begin with. My concern was that our cat gets picked on already by the neighbourhood ginger tom so I made sure that the pup knew the cat ranked higher than she did. They now get on fine and whilst the pup occasionally still chases the cat (and gets told off for it), the cat does lie on her back and sort of shuffle over to the dog knowing full well that she is 'protected' by us. They now have a healthy love/irritate relationship which I'm happy with. Just make sure your cat has a place of her own where she can escape without your pup constantly pestering her. Mine has my daughter's bunk bed but will invariably come down for a play withe the pup at some point in the day. They'll get used to living together eventually.:)

thank you for all your advice.
Simba gave the pup a telling off this morning for being to playfull.
Now jubilee(the pup)seems to know not to be to playfull around simba and i think they will now learn to live with each other.
Yet again thank you for all your advice.
