We have a 1yr old Golden Retriever bitch she has had dandruff since a puppy, the vet confirmed it is not creeping dandruff, she is not itchy with it, it is just a bit unsigtly as she is pale & the dandruff is dark due to her good pigment. She is fed on Hills Science plan I have just changed her from puppy to adult & this has made no difference. None of our others are affected by it, I have known friends goldens to have dandruff but it has usually cleared by this age. Anyone got any experience/thoughts on the matter?

When Buster was a pup the vet recomened I changed his food (he didn't rate what I was allready feeding), a few weeks into the new diet and Buster started to get dandruff, I changed his food back and the danadruff cleared up. Things like this are often due to diet, even if you've fed dogs this food in the past with no probs it can still be unsuitable for this girl.
I doubt the vet wil agree though as I bet they sell Hills Science Plan or at least recomend it ;)

I agree, find a good food that agrees with your dog and I'm sure it'll clear up

We have fed ours on raw food for about a year now.  The difference in their skin and coats is quite noticeable.  Our oldest boy, who was a rescue dog, came with itchy skin, ear flare-ups, and was forever moulting. You would not know it was the same dog since we took him off complete food.

Hope you hit on the right regime for your Goldie.

Thanks for that mastifflover will look into different foods for her. I dare say you are right re vets they ususally try to sell Hill's although I have never got it from them as I belong to their breeder scheme.
I was thinking of trying Burns has anybody any experience of using it?

What raw food are you using Misty, I haven't fed raw foods for years now since my first Goldie went of it.

What raw food are you using Misty

Hi Beastie,

We use tripe chunks, beef chunks, heart chunks, chicken wings, liver, sometimes lamb which is minced (only because I can't find anyone who does bigger pieces). We have it delivered from Berriewoods who have been very reliable. I also give them eggs quite often and raw liquidised veggies each day.  Sometimes one of the bitches does go off her food when she is feeling a bit hormonal, so then I give her a tin or two which she generally will eat for a couple of days. I always keep a few tins in the cupboard just in case - not raw I agree but I'm not sure it's a good idea to be too purist about it. We have been very pleased with their skin, coats and general vitality.

When I was a girl (just a few years ago LOL), my mum used to feed our dogs on raw horsemeat - it used to come with a green stain so you knew it wasn't for human consumption!

James wellbeloved has been super at giving our labs a nice dandruff free coat. Its hypo allergenic. A bit pricey but it agrees with our dogs the best. Also pop a cod liver oil tablet into the food bowl once a day, it will make the skin a bit more oily maybe relieving the dandruff. Also try to refrain from bathing alot as it strips the natural oils from the coat.

Thanks for that Misty it gives me something to work on.

I used to use James wellbeloved then it didn't agree with the mother to the pup in question so I had to change her diet & as I had intended feeding litter on Hills as had seen good results from it I put her on that & gradually changed all ther others over but it may be worth a try with this one. I have tried the cod liver oil for several months but it hasn't made any difference.

How about adding some sardine/mackerel in oil to the complete maybe a couple of times a week/

I think she will like that idea, thanks.
