we have a litter of pups who are 5 weeks old now. They have been weaned onto Hills puppy food as my boyfriend feeds his adult dogs hills and he believes that to be a good food. They seem to be doing well on it, but it makes their poo smell disgusting, which is not nice! I've noticed his adult dogs have particularly pungent faeces so i'm thinking it might be a hills food thing. What dry complete do you usually use for weaning your pups?

my pup is on Hills puppy food and his poos smell ok ( as well as they can do i suppose) but not pungent at all.
my friend has a litter of pups on arden grange at moment (4 weeks) and to be honest their poos smell pretty bad as well.
what does the mother get fed?

I have used eukanuba puppy food plus boiled chicken breasts and white coley fish along with Goats Milk. With the dry food I always soak it for an hour in water and then mash it. When the pups reach 6 weeks i then gradually leave more 'harder' lumps for them to eat, until they can easily manage to eat it without being mashed.
Presumably you are soaking the Hills in plenty of water for a time before feeding? IMO it is probably not a good idea to change the pups food now.
When the pups reach 3 weeks old and are no longer being cleaned up by their mum then I have noticed that their poo's do start smelling quite a bit but I just think this is normal. It is a big change for the pups digestive system when they are being weaned,I wouldn't worry about, it but clean up immediately after them.
Is this your first litter?
Yes, this is our first litter.
We have been soaking the food up until now, and we are now cutting back on the water as our vet said they are ready to eat harder food now as they are progressing really quickly. The bitch is also fed on hills puppy food at the moment, although she is usually fed on hills maintance chicken.

I would still keep giving plenty of water with their food. Also try the goats milk, they will love it!
Good Luck with your litter and hope that all goes well. It will probably get noisier and busier for you the next couple of weeks!!
thanks will do. They are a real handful already, they have been playing since 3 and a half weeks old. Their eyes opened at 8 days so they seem to be progressing faster than i thought they would. They are great fun though, its going to be so hard to let them all go, they are all so wonderful!
