We have a Bose which offers great depth of sound, even in the kitchen, but it's pricey.  Last year my OH bought a Kensington docking station for upstairs and the sound is more than adequate.  It cost app £25 from Richer Sounds.  If you have a branch nr you it's well worth taking your iPod (borrowing your daughters) to check out whatever they have in stock as they are always very reasonable.  They'll be happy for you to try before you buy.

Sound quality is so variable, and personal, that it's worth checking everything out in person first even if you later decide to buy online.

I've just found it online - price has gone up to £50 but I'd recommend it.

Here it is again but at £31.60 - can't be bad!

Depends on budget but I got a fab one the other year but it was about £100.  Sound is great and much better than the Bose equivalent, IMO, and for less than half the price.  It's by Klipsch and I got it from Amazon. I love it and people are very impressed with the sound but I appreciate it may be more than you wanted to spend.

Nip into Currys they have a few at different budgets just remember which Ipod she has.
- By Star [in] Date 14.11.08 14:27 UTC
Thanks for that. So iPods are different then?
She hasnt actually bought one yet so do these 'docks' vary to the type of Ipod they are?

Yess a shuffle is different from a Nano but a classic and nano are the same I dont know about a touch???

Ok. Better see what she is going to buy then before I go any further :-)

Most good speakers have adaptors to accomodate different size iPods - they just click in.  If you go to the apple site you can see the current range of iPods available

Apparently its an IPod nano

More confusingly there are several variants of this aswell!!  Theres an original, a 2nd generation, a video one and now these new ones that are chrono or something (dunno if these are nanos tho!).

Hi Star,

We bought a docking station for our Ipods from the Apple shop - do you have one nearby? Our docking station was not cheap but the sound quality is fantastic - we have it in the kitchen which is quite an echoey room but still sounds great. There are different Ipod nanos (I think mine is the second one they brought out) but the docking station we got fits all sizes. I see another poster has a link to the Apple site, worth checking out I think. :-)

I bought a docking station last year from Comet. Think it was about 45 watts speakers and it has been very good. £50 ish.
- By Star [in] Date 15.11.08 07:12 UTC
So generally what is a reasonably good wattage to get?

I would say at least 15 w each speaker.  Logitech have good reviews.  I recently got a whole new surround system for my PC as I have so much on my I-tunes and it was Logitech that came out top for this also.

Now I might be wrong but you have to often search under Ipod speakers rather than docking station.

Found some good reviews for others on amazon

Mine is a Klipsch and it's FAB!!!!  Had it for 18 months and I love it.  And if it's down to £69.99 then its a real bargain - might get another one for upstairs...

We have just bought an ipod dock/alarm clock from sainsburys for £19 (half price) it's made by Red and comes in black and pink and its great the sound quality is good too and it has little covers that are specific to the generation of ipod so that they fit in the dock correctly.
