Topic Dog Boards / General / Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas....

Does anyone on here have first hand experience of this breed???

I'm really keen on adding one to the home at some point (not for a couple years atleast) but i've always owned working breeds - GSD's, Rottie's etc.  Along with my male Rottie I also own a female Akita.  Its going to be abit of an adjustment I imagine but the HWV's have really captured me and i'd love to own one at some point.

If I do get a Vizsla in the future I would like to continue showing (as I do this with mine already) and train and compete in working trials.

So any info on this gorgeous breed???

I have one, and there are a few of us on here!  Plenty of others with way more experience than me but there is a lot of good information at the HWVA site about the breed.  There is a page with breeders details but you can also find a number of their websites if you Google. Some concentrate almost exclusively on the working aspect but there are breeders, dogs and handlers that both work and show very successfully and this dual aspect is very much part of the appeal.  The Hungarian and US sites too are quite informative.

This is my first wire and I already know it won't be my last.  We got him after a lot of research and I can honestly say that we've not been disappointed; in fact he has exceeded our expectations in all things from perfect house pet/companion through to showing.  I don't believe I'm alone in my thinking either, many of the owners/handlers think they are pretty exceptional too.  You may not get many raves on here though; they are so fantastic that most of us are quite happy to keep them a secret!! :)

You can always PM me though...

I think them lovely and seem to have a steadier nerve than some of the smooth ones I have met.

They are a wonderful breed!  Mine is also a relative of those owned by dogs a babe, philly256 and Emily Rose :-)  I'm sure this one will not be my last - they're really clever, full of character and really loving.  Scrumptious :-)  The Kennel Clubs Friends for Life 2008, Yepa, is a Wire.

I met the most beautiful Vizsla at DD on sunday (Amber). She was beautiful. Wish I had thought to get breeders details.
Mind you here is a good place to look when I am ready

bilbo....was it a wire or a smooth? we are talking wires here...very different :) Also forgot to mention to OP that if you want a working gundog then they are the bees knees. Our boy is taking to work really well and we hope he will be multi talented as a deer stalker and austringers dog as well as a "gun" gundog.

Just replying to the last post but want to thank everyone for having the time to reply and confirm how wonderful this breed is.  I have been pointed in the right direction to what looks like a very good breeder so I will contact them for a chat.  Like i've said before i'm not looking to add one just yet (want to wait til my youngest dog has grown up abit!) but I would like to be fully prepared for such a change in breeds!

I would definitely like to do something other than showing and the usual obedience but I was thinking more along the lines of working trials with a Wire, I guess this is mainly because I know a tiny bit about it compared to gundog work but I would be happy to take advise and give anything a go!

> was it a wire or a smooth

This one was a smooth .. I know they are very different, both are absolutley beautiful,  we have carried out a lot of research and actually met quite a few. As well as us having a GSP  the Vizslas was our main reason for our visit on gundog day at crufts last year.  GSP is actually my daughters but we have decided when she leaves home it would be unfair on the dogs and us if she took him from the home. Her life is her dogs. She would not be interested in "things" for a house. Because to her a house would not  be home until it had pawprints on the floors!!
My daughters ideal would be one of each as she adores both. The dog we saw on Sunday ( a smooth haired),  just had "some thing" about her.
Daughter does not plan to move out for a year or two yet so we have plenty of time to look, plan and SAVE  our pennies yet.
Your comments confirmed our thinking  as well.

I knew one a long time ago. Fantastic nature & a  handsome beast too!

I have often thought I'd like to get one myself, but I appear to be hooked on pastorals at the moment. I really must make that shift! :-)

Wires are simply FANTASTIC. I will never own another breed and have shared my life with them since 1996.I just cannot find a downside of the breed.
