My dog loves fish.  All types, I often buy whatever is on special at the counter and steam it for her and add it in.  Sometimes salmon, sometimes cod etc.  I haven't given her smoked fish though.  It's suprising when cooked and flaked up how far just a little bit goes.

I presume that oily fishes like sardines and mackerel would be good for coat condition?

The breeder of the pup we are getting gives pilchards regularly to her lot. :-)

I buy pilchards in tomato sauce and tuna in oil for my lot ,they get it once a week in there dinners, and they adore it!!
If you go to Lidl ot Aldi, you get it cheaper.

I give all my dogs all sorts of fish and they love what ever I give them from sardines, trout, sprats, cod and when they are very lucky they have salmon, but I feed them raw with heads and tails still on. And yes they are very good for them, I first started feeding them when my girl was in whelp as someone told me it helps with good milk flow, I don't know how true that is, but she had a litter of 11 and fed them all herself right up till the last one left at 9 weeks.

I have always given mine a selection of fish but always tinned.... Pilchards, Sardines, Mackerel or Tuna in either oil or tomato sauce and they all love it. I have always been worried about giving fresh fish because of the bones but from reading various threads on CD it would appear that fresh fish can be given safely. Am I correct in assuming this ? Is there any fresh fish that you would not feed ?

I'd be a bit concerned with tomatoe sauce tinned fish as I think it might have quite alot of sugar and salt added.  I reckon the oil ones are better?  Infact, sardines on toast is one of my old favourites - perhaps the dog won't get a look in??  Ha Ha

Sardines in sunflower/oilve oil & most of the supermarkets now do value frozen white fish fillets ranging from £1.30 - £2.40 a bag.  I always have these in for the cats and anytime the dogs have an upset tum mixed with basmati rice!   ;-)

Tomatoes are actually on the 'poisons' list for dogs, so maybe things in tomato sauce should be avoided.  I love feeding the cheap frozen packs of white fish (coley and whiting) raw to the dogs and they adore it.

Hi, can you tell me what else is on the poisonous list or where I would find it??
- By Debussy [gb] Date 08.11.08 23:28 UTC
Here is a link for a list:

Actually, on closer inspection, it appears it's the unripe fruit and the rest of the plant that is poisonous, so maybe the ripe juice is OK.  I always thought it was red fruit too.  It's a handy list to have, especially for keen gardeners.

You can feed them most fish just make sure that you do not feed Pacific salmon.
