Thought I would report back on what I thought would be a horrendous night to give some hope to others who are in the same position. Having moved into the middle of a large housing estate I dreaded last night. We already had had a few panicky evenings with Meg shaking, panting, charging around looking for escape from the noise. After last year where I got held up on the way home to find one terrified dog who had torn her dew claws trying to take down a door by quarter to six -this time I was all prepared. Walk - get back in by 4, food, extra dollop of pasta, out for toilet by 5, turn the radio on loud and relax. She didn't react until closer fireworks started about 6.30 - there were very few really big bangs until about 9ish - when we had some that I could feel the vibrations of never mind the dog. Meg panted and ran around the house a few times and then settled behind the tv while we sat and dozed watching our programmes. She became so still I was worried her heart had stopped - but no she must have dropped into an exhausted sleep. I got her out for the toilet just after 10 and thankfully nothing went off when we were out there. She settled down in her basket about 11.30 and despite distant pops and bangs she didn't react. I think the very fact that we have so many around here has in a way desensitized her - once she realised that nothing was coming to get her she gave up. I was so pleased I got an undisturbed night's sleep and Meg is showing signs of learning to cope with it. We still have a few more evenings to go. I am just thankful that I was in a position to be with her earlier in the day to prepare. We still have to get over the hurdle of her being in the house by herself - which will happen next week because my OH has booked up tickets to see Eddie Izzard locally. Midweek though so fingers crossed.
