Just saw this on the BBC site, the overbreeding of Staffs is getting to the point where they will be put down just for being that breed :(

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/shropshire/7693923.stm

It said any stray Staffordshire Bull Terriers it found in the future may put down "as a matter of procedure".

I do understand where they are coming from... if they are strays that some idiot has bred for fighting and they cant be rehomed... what is to be done with them?

I dont agree however, but again this is down to those stupid stupid arrogant individuals who breed them for fighting purpose, again, giving their breed a bad name when they are in fact a lovely breed when bred properly!!!

It should be the people who breed them to fight who are put down, not the owners!

I don't like that . you cant just put a dog down because of its breed what if they do it to a much loved pet that got lose. Can you Imagen phoning the dog home to be told your dog was put to sleep as soon as it came in because it was a staff. Its terrible :(

Thats what i thought when i read it but didnt write it for some reason

I dont know if it would be so hard, ohhh its a staffie put it down, i dont know if it would only be put down if cant be rehomed and its a fighting dog because of these idiots... its not the dogs fault and at the end of the day, its the dog thats suffering and i think its terrible!! People who treat dogs like this need shooting!!

It's awful that these dogs have to be put down but often they cannot be rehomed because of being trained to fight.  It is those mindless people that see dogs as a money making exercise that should be banned from keeping animals.  Staffies are no longer fashionable around here - the "in" dog is now Patterdale Terriers being bred and sold by people who know nothing about dogs.  One guy told me "I'm getting a Patterdale like yours".  Er he's a Border mate.

A large percentage of dogs in the cat and dog home are staffies or staffy crosses and I wonder if they will ever find a decent home.  It's such a shame because they are really lovely dogs when trained and looked after properly.

They seem to be saying after the statutory 7 days.

I also understand why they may end up having to do this, they don't have unlimited resorces to keep dogs they can't rehome and can't take any perceived risks .What shocks me is that the situation has got to this point.Too many being bred in the first place.
I'd hope they would check for microchips and anyone having lost one would report it to the dog warden/local dogs home so would be reunited.

as a staffi owner i find it so distressing, as you all have said its down to the stupid, irresponsible, low life scum who have not a clue about these wonderful loving dogs, yes i would agreee put the owners to sleep,.now im angry

I can foresee this happening in other counties too if they do adopt this policy.  And unfrtunately it is understandable why.  If you have been to your local rescue centre recently I'm sure you'd agree that the vast majority of dogs in their are staffie crosses.  And if you speak to the staff, some of them are rehomed only to end up back in shelter days later for behavioural problems.  For the dog, to be rehomed, rehomed and rehomed, but always coming back to a shelter isn't much of a life.  Its sad.

It's not just the ones bred for fighting (although how they know this is a mystery) but anyone breeding Staffords for the wrong reasons ,who knows where the pups will end up.The free ads are full of them and if money is the motive for breeding them they aren't going to care who they sell them to.It must be hard enough to find good homes for pups but with Staffords even more so.

this is so sad

So how do Stafford owners / breeders tackle the problem then..?

(Not directed at anyone in particular, just thinking out loud and pondering)

Seem to be too many haphazard people breeding the life out of my wonderful breed
But even the 'decent' breeders seem to be breeding a lot - I've said before, only need look at the number of litter registrations over the last couple of years..
What on earth is the answer.....
