Hi
Our 9 month old mini dachshund has just started pulling up the corners of
carpets, mostly in the room he is kept overnight.
We have tried a spray which contained Citronella, and also Mustard (which a friend
suggested) but nothing seems to put him off.
Any suggestions would be welcomed, thanks

Have you tried crating him in the night? Or if he's ripping the carpet up he may be bored so try adding a treat filled Kong or some toys while he's in there?
I never let our roam while young for fear of eating cables and electric things as we dont have a singled out room :)

We havent tried crating him yet, as the room is fairly safe with no wires.
His bed and toys are in the room with him, so he's either doing it when we first put him
in for the night or when he wakes up.
he has tried it in other rooms but we normally catch him before he causes any damage.
Just bought a kong but havent tried it yet.

If you get something tasty which is water based (Kong do their own or gravy stock will do as long as it isnt too salty) and then plug one end with a bit of peanut butter and freeze it, it will provide hours of fun licking it out as long as the floor is washable of course lol ;)

Kongs are the best toy around in my eyes, we always ram markies in our boys kong before we leave him crated and he is fine with that and has loads of fun trying to work them out :)

Do you have to leave the pup in a carpeted room?  Could he not be kept in the kitchen for example with a soft bed for him to sleep on?

He's probably trying to dig his way through to where you are :)  Being only a puppy this will seem a very good idea if he's lonely, stressed or simply bored.

I'd suggest you bed him down in a room where he can do no damage or alternatively bring his bed/basket/crate into your bedroom so that you can break this habit without further damage to your home or his manners.

Hmmmn I still have three areas in my hall/stairs from 15/16 years ago, our dog selected best resting spots as the sun moved around. She dug and scratched until satisfied with it. I wish I could have laid beds.

Unfortunately its a kitchen diner that can't be divided.
He didn't do it last night so maybe he's grown out of it already LOL

I sympathize with you as my puppy Retriever has been doing this to the lino in the room I keep her in when I'm away. The problem was once she'd started it, she wouldn't forget about it and would systematically come back to it as soon as left on her own. I ended up (in despair) putting some metal garden fencing on the floor she'd started ripping (only a corner) and put her plastic bed on top of it. She's tried pushing the bed but when she found the metal grids she finally gave up...
