Borrowing a welping box is never a good idea I am afraid, Arthur, because of the infection risk. Better to either buy a disposable one or make one, most breed books contain measurements for a simple wooden one.

Hi, we made a welping box from bits of wood from a old wall unit I did not need, my hubby measured the cupboard where she was going to have her pups and made the box to fit, he also put in an extra piece of wood to act as a rail just high enough up the "box" for a puppy to get under so the mum would not lie on the pups. and I bought a heat bulb from our local market and this worked for me for years. I just cleaned and disenfected the wood before a litter was due to be born and it was easily wiped down most days when the pups got older and they could come out. When the pups were roughly 3 weeks old I had a big cage with a puppy pen attatched in the living room with polythene over the carpet so they could run about and be socialised. Its amazing how quickly pups use newspaper for the toilet. I live not far from Glasgow so if you need any advice just e mail me and I will pass on my phone no. What breed do you have? as I might know someone near you that could give you advice.

Hi Where abouts are you putting your bitch to have her pups, I have a large cupboard which has a light in it, so I use a Heat lamp which keeps it nice and warm, you just make a fairly large square with the wood and then screw on what we call rails round the inside about 8 inches up your square, the rails are made of thinner wood and narrower, this is to stop the bitch lying on the puppies and they can get under the rail and be safe, I hope this makes sense, you can also buy ready made welping boxes, but some of them are expensive, or only last for 1 litter of pups. If you click on my name you can e mail me and I will try and help all I can, have you had your bitch mated yet? Can the owner of the stud dog not help you, or your bitches breeder?
