Hi, looking to see if anyone can shed any light on my pup. Last monday he developed a large "lump" on his nose, had it checked by one of the vets at work who said it was likely he had bumped it and as he was fine otherwise (gave him a mini health mot) to keep an eye on it, well it went away by monday night. Then on the tuesday after his afternoon walk, he developed large lumps (urticaria) on his abdomen and legs, not itchy, large and red some arounbd an inch in length. I gave him some piriton and after an hour they went away, assumed he had been through nettles or something. Spoke to same vet who reckoned it was an allergic reaction, but could be difficult to say to what. Advised give piriton if necc and monitor.
However, since then, every day he has been getting them, today was the worst, had him out for around an hour, and afterwards in house his face was covered in them, possibly about 20 lumps, and under his legs and belly as well. gave 2 piriton this time and they have eventually went away. They dont seem to bother him.
I havent changed his food, been on same since 8 weeks old, havent bought anything new for house, febreze etc, seems to be worst after a walk. Does anyone know of any plants that may do this at this time of year? Hes never had anything until this week, usually a pretty sturdy pup.
Also, it happens after walks in different areas, as in at work and at home, theres 23 miles between them so its something thats in both areas?

Could it be something in your car? If you are taking him by car to a place to walk him it could be that. I have only ever had it once in one of my dogs and it went after one piriton never to return. I on the other hand get it all the bloomin' time!

For me it is caused by temperature changes, going from a warm house into the cold, getting very cold, I get it. What breed is your dog? Perhaps he is suffering from sudden temperature changes.

hes a 10month old ridgeback. i wondered about the car, but ive not used it at all over the weekend, and after his walk on sunday that was the worst ive seen him. we were out for about an hour and it was pretty cold and absolutly pouring so i wonder if temperature does have something to do with it, but this last week hasnt been the coldest, so its weird its all of a sudden started. im totally confused.

What kind of ground is he walked on? Is it farm land, park land or waste ground? This could make a difference depending on what has been done to the ground. For instance, just recently my local farmer is spraying who knows what onto his fields getting ready to plant out his winter crops. One of my dogs took an allergic reaction (we think) to something in one of the fields. AB's had to be used to clear it. Are there any wasps in the area? They could be stinging as they are getting very sluggish, though that would bother him I would think.

at work its mainly park land, some lawns and football pitches, with some woodland and a river walk. at home its mainly farmland, with some walking along canal. the thing is, it is happening after walking on both areas, and i live 20 odd miles away from work, so not sure why happening after both. dont think it would be wasps, havent seen any here not even in the summer this year.

Ok, this might sound daft, but it could be a type of hay fever  ;-) The plants are all starting to settle down for the winter and some could be shedding spores, etc, that your boy is allergic to. I suffer in early spring and late autumn, but not as bad in the summertime. It tends to be tree pollen that I'm allergic to, so your boy could be the same ;-) I'd keep the piriton handy and see what happens over the next few weeks.
