Can anyone please tell me if they where i can buy a Matetel ovulation tester, i have rang Matetel and the lady said she is not doing it at the moment.  Thanks

I use an Isis ovulation tester, it's designed for humans but works on dogs, again it uses saliva, and you are checking for ferning.  The bonus is they are half the price of the matetel.

No, it's just used to test for ovulation.

I beg to differ - if you take a saliva sample at 21 days post mating and it ferns, your bitch is in whelp - the salts in the saliva work the same at that point as they do when ovulating.

Many thanks, i thought perhaps that would be the case but wasnt sure will get one of the isis ones then as the Matetel are not making anymore at the moment due to the lady having lost a member of her close family.
Thanks

Hello Air,
I did this test using the matetel at 21days and had loads of ferning, yet my bitch turned out to be having a phantom pregnancy! So I don't think it can be guaranteed the case.

I see what you are saying but she could have conceived and then reabsorbed.  How would you have known?

I had a MateTel (until one of my girls decided to eat it!!) so bought one of these instead: http://www.accessdiagnostics.co.uk/acatalog/OVATEL_Saliva_Ovulation_Microscope.html  basically exactly the same, but less than half the cost!

We found it did work, my girl went on to have a litter of 9 after the test confirmed it was the right time for mating, our biggest litter yet!
