Hello ,
I am at my wits end and was wondering if any of you can help . I will start from the beginning... June this year my boy starting to lose a patch of hair on his back , I was told this was nothing to worry about as it is common in our breed , by the end of July the patch had got twice as big! I took him to the vet and they put him on a 2 week course of antibiotics , this did not help as the patches started to come on his back legs as well. I took him back to the vets and they tested him for mites and ringworm but he was negative. They then put him on another kind of anti biotics but over 4 weeks this time. The fur started to fall out all over his body in patches , some patches round and raised.
I took him back for another try to see if they could do anything else and the vet scraped him again , she found 1 mite , yes 1 and said he needed dipping in aludex , I was a bit unsure of this as all dogs carry the mite and I think she scraped that much is the reason she found 1. I bathed him in the dip but it has made no diffence. I forgot to add he's had 3 months worth of advocate as well!! He has had his diet changed to JWB and has been on this for around 4 months now , he has no fur on his back legs at all , his testicles are bald , his back has a large patch missing with the odd hair holding on , he has a couple of raised patches on his head and his side is bald and its now spreading down his front legs and paws! I was advised to cover him in benzyl benzoate , have tried this but it doesn't help.  Please any advice much appriciated xx

Has your vet done both tests for thyroid problems?  I would be wanting this myself with the history.

They havn't even mentioned thyroid , I will give them a call , I feel for the poor boy he's going thru so much. Thanks

Hi

I can't help but Maisie has the same problem but not as bad. I was also told it is common in her breed. It started with a bald patch on her head that they did nothing about but then it started on her back. She deveoped spots and started scratching a lot. They also put her on antibiotics which improved it but not completely. It then flared up bad again and they decided to do scrappings - found nothing, biopseys - found nothing. I was told it was probably a mite that all dogs have that flares up when dogs are under the weather began with a 'D' cant remember the name off the top of my head. Sent her away with more antibiotics, flared up again but sent her away with nothing as they said they could not keep giving antibiotics. She is continually bald on her head and down her back but i only take her to the vets if she gets spots and starts scratching. Wish there was someting to make her hair grow back people comment on it.

Was is Dermadex? Thats what I was told it was , a drop in there immune system which lets the mite take over but im not convinced it's that. I know what u mean , I take my boy to ringcraft just for fun and my boy absolutely loves it but people pull him down for his fur. I have just had an email and told to try Dermacton cream. I really don't know what else to try.

Ask them to consider allergies and Cushings as well. :-)

Could be Demadex.  Have you advised the breeder as they shouldn't have a litter from the mother if at least one of her pups has this.

Yes, thats it, demadex. She gets the spots which is supposed to be the mite going into the hair folicle which then makes the hair drop out. But it doesnt really make sense as the hair has never grown back and the whole of her head and back did'nt have spots, just a few.

It does sound like this.  Some dogs it doesn't grow back properly, others you can tell by their coats that they've had it.

Hopefully someone on here might be able to advise you more on how if they've had any dogs they got their dogs coat back to some normality.
