Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Bitch in season behaviour !!
- By AliceC Date 10.10.08 11:00 UTC
Hi all,

As most of you know I have 3 bitches - 2 are spayed, one not. My unspayed bitch (Cavalier) is in the first stages of her season and last night, I caught my Samoyed sniffing at her 'lady parts'. I told her to stop and when she looked up at me, she was chattering her teeth and dribbling!! Now I have seen this in males before but never in females and a spayed one at that! Is this normal and why would she do that? The worst of it is the Cavalier was lifting her leg up so Meg could get a good sniff  Do anyone else's dogs do this or do I just have confused girls ??

Think as the hormone system is not as it should be in neutered animals they can sometimes do strange things. Having said that intact ones do sometimes as well, but I am surprised at the male behaviour from a bitch but she is obviously excited by the other being in season.

Hi Alice - I have 3 complete bitches and one of mine will do this to the other two and they will quite happily leift their leg to let her have a good sniff as you say.  I too have confused girls :)  The two obliging ones of mine are in to be spayed in the next few weeks so it will be interesting to see if it still happens at the would have been next season.

Thanks for the replies. Mini, I'm glad I am not the only one with a leg lifter - my girl does it on walks too when other dogs stop to say hello to her - it can be highly embarrassing as it looks like she is cocking her leg ! I think she loves all the attention to be honest, she's a bit of a floozie ;-)

Twice a year for around 3 weeks I can't have friends into my house - its just too embarassing.  Over the years, I have learned to turn a blind eye to the somewhat moulin rouge leg lifting and mounting (either end - ahem!) behaviour that goes on in my house for these 6 weeks out of 52!  The joys of ownership!

Oh your post made me laugh - "moulin rouge" - I love it!! I'll give my girls credit, they always seem to mount the right end!! I know exactly what you mean though - if its not the dogs mounting each other, the cavalier will get one of her soft toys out instead. I was lucky last night - our visitors had just left when they started the leg lifting and teeth chattering - they normally do it when non-doggie people are visiting !!
