does anyone have a rough idea of the weight one would expect a 6 month old ess show puppy should weigh?

Depends on breed but a if it is a welsh terrier (guessing from your name) then they should eventually weigh 20-21 pounds (9-9 1/2kg) so by 9 months they almost reach this full weight like a lot of small breeds so working backwards at a guess I would around 6kg, I am sure someone will give a more exact answer but as they are a small breed just look for a waist, at 6 months they shouldnt look fat they would look if anything a bit lean as they are doing lots gangly growing.
Maybe a quick call to the pups breeder is in order, also a great time for them to have a look and see what future potential you have on your hands

I think ess is short for English Springer Spaniel?
Now I always assumed from the posters user name that they had WELSH Springers :)

That was what I thought too Barbara. :-)

I am having a dim day again, did wonder what the ess was but completely blanked it. So in that case I have no idea of ideal weight. Can't you tell I am a terrier and hound women :)

I would say approx. 15kg however would vary between dog/bitch and construction really.
Can I ask why you are asking?
she,s 6 months and weighs 19.5 we are spaniels but bigger than cockers

That seems quite heavy for a 6 month pup as I would expect my breed bitches to be that weight at maturity.

My lad final mature correct adult weight for size he has become 33kg, was 23kg at 6 months old - just checked. If that helps any.
think maybe she,s ok she doesnt look overweight i will soon know when were in the ring with her own breed
we are a med size breed The highest on leg of all british land spaniels

Agree with Barbara that she does seem slightly over for her age. It seems to be that pups at six months of age seem to be in my experience approx two thirds of their adult weight, I could be completly wrong and I am sure someone will be along soon with a more detailed equation of how to calculate this.
I would think Vicky (vlw2209) is correct and about the 15kg seems about right to me, although not my breed, so more than happy to be corrected only experience of them is I have friends with this breed and a keen interest in the gundog group as a whole.

That would make sense with my GSP's weights. Can't remember what the flat coat was at 6mths - bad mummy!!

Yep same here at 6 months I would expect about 15kg for mine which are around 20kg as adults (bitches about 19 to 20 inches tall).
Most springers I know weight about the same, but to be honest most of those are supposed working (Pet) breeding.
show springers are much bigger then working ,my girl weighs 16.9kg and is working so id say around this weight is right for a 6months old show ess ,i think she may be over weight ,feel her ribs if theres alot of fat cover then she is x
I would say she's perhaps a little over but at her age it's not too much of a problem I would much rather see a pup carrying a little too much rather than not enough. It's amazing how they can just drop it when they get a growth spurt. The only problem is if they get the weight onto their shoulders as it can be difficult to shift and spoil the definition of their layback.
Run your hands down her ribs if you can easily feel them with just a thin layer of fat this is fine, also stack her and then stand in front of her head and look at her shape, has she got a waist?
When are you bringing her out?
Vicky
