Is there anyway of weighing your dog without going ot the vets?? This may seem a silly question but the house scales dont work!!! We have a boxer puppy who is constantly growing, and im trying to figure out his food quantity. Its hard without knowing his weight and its a trip to the vets.

Are their any scales i can but that are not to expensive??

Is your vets  long way from home?  Is there a walk you can do to take in the vets as part of your route?

If I was ever going near the vets I'd load my boy up and take him with me.  Regular visits to the vets, without treatment, is usually a good thing so it's sensible to take him there if you can.  He can sit in the waiting room for a short time and get used to the other critters.  My vets scales were in the waiting room so I could just sling him on whenever I needed to, they'd record his weight for their records, and I could sort out his food as necessary.

One of the big garden centres near us has a pet department with scales (I think quite few do), may be worth a try.

Failing that you might need to buy some new scales.  My OH always lifts our dogs to weigh them but a friend of mine weighs hers in a baby bath balanced on the scales!!

Apart from new borns I have never weighed a pup.  I just feed a little more every few days when they are growing.  It's usually pretty obvious when a quantity is no longer satisfying them and just observe that they are not being greeding in their demands and putting on too much weight.  The guidance on the pack is just that, guidance.  Puppies vary in their nutritional needs both individually and by stages so it is good to learn to observe and become confident about adjusting accordingly.

I just use our house scales.  Weigh myself first, then pick up puppy/dog, then take my weight off.  Just did it the other day with our 25kg dogs!  I'd chaged their food a month ago, didn't think they had changed weight, but just wanted to check.

i never feed what it says on the food bag but i do think its important to know the weight as you need to worm once a month for the first 6 months and that goes by weight.
Also agree that going to the vet for weighing is a great idea as it gets them used to it without haveing horrablel treatments.
My vet ladys give a treat each time i weigh so they now love going to the vet.
Which can only be a good thing as it would be very hard work taking a Newf for treatment that hated the vet!!!!

A trip to the vets once a month is a lot more feasable than every time you think the food needs upping.

Thanks everyone, it is abit of a trek to the vets unfortunatley but will try to get there once a month. Standing on the scales first and then holding the dog is a brill idea in the meantime!!!!
