Today this is just what my 7 month old girl was doing!
Is this very common in bitches, or is this a sign of anything else?
We were very amused by it, not once but several times whilst out walking.....she's been at home for ages in season and this was her first decent outing.
Karen :)

Some bitches will perform marking behaviour the same as dogs - I think you said somewhere else that she's in season - they like to mark then to leave nice juicy pheromones about so the boys can come a-courting. ;-)

Yes, some bitches do and I used to think it was a sign that they were due in season when it became more noticable.

Hi my bitch has always done this, But it is so that she does not get her coat wet as she is a very particular little madam.!!

LOL
Glad it's not just her then, she did noticably squat a lot just before her season began and I didn't realise what it was until she actually started to spot.
Now however as the season ends this is the first of the 'cocking'.
Karen ;)

It is also a dominant sign (she is growing up) that she feels confident to mark over other dog marks.
One of mine started it after her second litter, so increased hormones do seem to encourage it.

My Akita cocks her leg alot! If you don't catch her quickly enough to stop her she'll cock her leg against trees, lamp posts or walls walking down the street. She does also crouch down aswell if there isn't anything to wee against. Also she'll go in particular places on certain walks.

My Sal (sbt) does the same too, sometimes she just crouch down but at certain points she will left her leg.
My 2 year old Leo does this, so high she is prone to topple, she is a very confident young lady!!!!!!
one of my goldies does this, but she does think she's top dog. Its more when she squats she lifts a leg!
Our girl quite often lifts one leg, but as other people have said, I think it's to keep her paw dry (as we have taught her to pee in the gutter). I think it shows great common sense, not to mention balance and muscle control!

My big Malamute always cocks her leg - and if we have other dogs round she does it extra high! We had some friends round a few weeks ago with Sammies and they actually thought she was a boy as she was taking it in turns with their boy to mark various things in our garden!!
Little Cavalier scent marks but only cocks her leg occasionally, she does a scent marking wee in a little circle around where other dogs have peed...especially if we are on a new walk.
