Hi. I have a 9 wk old puppy westie and also 18 month old cairn, problem is he has really bad colitis he has the vets tonight for his injection but i dont think they will give it to him. My other dog had colitis when she was a puppy but nothing like this. It is pure blood red. I have changed my older dog onto his food for a few weeks thinking that if they are both on the same then it will give his stomach a rest from the richer stuff am i doing right in that? Many thanks for any help.

Is it the younger or older pups with the colitis, if the younger then I don't see how having them both on puppy food will alter things, unless of course the baby was pinching the older ones food which disagreed with him.
Has the one with the bowel issue been checked for Giardia or Campylobacter? both causes of unresponsive diarrhoea.
it is the younger puppy that has colitis he is taking the cairn's food which is very rich, he just loves it though. So that's why i was thinking to put them both on same for a while. Not had puppy checked for that will wait and see what the Vet has to say tonight.

It may be worth keeping the dogs seperate while they are eating, that way you can controll exactly what little one is eating and the quantities he's getting - if he is stealing the other dogs food, simply over-eating could be making his tummy trouble worse.

Also it is not recommended to change a puppies diet or if so it has to be done gradually. Your puppy is changing his own diet by stealing the other dogs food. That in itself could be causing the tummy upset. I doubt if the Vet will give him his vaccination tonight but I would still keep the appointment and the Vet will probably prescribe pro kolin or something to calm his tummy down.

I very much doubt the older pups food will be richer than the pups food, rather the otehr way around, it is likely that the pup is over eating or picked up a bug, or change in water, worming treeatment etc have given him the runs.
The older dog's food is from my partner's own Butchers Shop they make their own pet food. So yes i do think it is too rich for the puppy. Will wait to see what Vet says tonight but i'm not expecting him to have his injections. Will have to wait till he's feeling better for that.

I would just seperate the dogs when they have their meals and then you don't have to worry about the little pup taking something he shouldn't have or over indulging in your older dogs food.
Took puppy to the Vets last night, he has to have tests on his poo for Campylobacter thing is if it comes back positive then other puppy needs to have tests too. He was really off colour last night crying out every 10 mins think he must have bad belly ache, i put him on a warm bottle and he seemed to settle. Hope this bug thing will clear up.
