Salty's just got a bit of a nasty puncture wound on the back of his neck after an over-excited agility scrap.  Just wondering if there's anything I can do to reduce the chances of it getting infected - we've been putting salty water on, this is probably a stupid question but can you put Savlon on dogs?

When my dog had a fight with his father and ended up with a lot of wounds on his face the vet told us to use Savlon on them. He was on antibiotics too though

Keeping an open wound clean and dry is important.  Using any creams, potions or lotions without vet supervision is misguided as moisture breeds bacteria, even in so called anti-bacterial topical applications.

Personally I would have had "a bit of a nasty puncture wound on the back of his neck " checked by a vet rather than trying to self treat.  A scratch or minor abrasion is perhaps easily dealt with by cleaning in saline solution but IMO a puncture should be assessed by a professional.  Dogs mouths, teeth and saliva carry a multitude of germs hence why if mere mortals are on the receiving end of a bite we would, if sensible, see a GP asap ;)

regards, Teri

I agree.  A puncture wound can go an awful lot deeper than you could every imagine whilst bleeding very little.  Did I every tell you about when I was bitten by a baboon..................

The new Savlon isn't not suitable for use on animals(especially cats), much better to treat minor cuts etc with cooled boiled saline than to put lotions etc on initially, then as the healing begins use a natural healing aid like Aloe Vera(straight from the plant is best ;-))

That's what the vet did when Wukee had a burst abscess on the top of his paw & adviced me to use Aloe Vera to help it heal afterwards

I always use hibiscub diluted to clean then apply germolene my mothers cure all.  My lot quite often charge into barbed wire or things when on walks.  I also use it on any bite wounds I have incured in the course of my work.
