Hanoverian Hounds are a German breed used to track wounded game. They are pure breds created in the 19th century - so have been around awhile. I understand they're hunting dogs and aren't really kept as pets/companions. I've never met one though.

I knew a breeder of these in Poland (sadly now deceased) they are an ancestor and less common than the Bavarian Mountain hound, nice dogs, lovely temperament th4e ones I ahve met of both breeds.

The larger Hanovarians reminded me of a Ridgeback type, with more Beagly ears and of course not as big.

The ones I knew were very much pets as well as hunting dogs.

I probably worded that badly - I meant they weren't usually kept as just pets, that if you owned one you hunted with it as they really needed to do their job. Is that true? It would be nice to meet one.

The people attracted to the breed have them because they want to hunt with them, but I had met some that were simply pets, very laid back characters.

they are mainly used in deer stalking and quite a lot of publicity in the fieldsports press prob means they will appear everywhere now!! :( They are not bloodhounds though!!

They are a blood tracking dog, properly really Hanovarian Scenthound.

In Poland it is mainly Wild Boar they are used for, the smaller Bavarian mountain Hound is used for deer.

When we were at the Midland Game Fair recently, someone was pulling a cart with a litter of them sitting in it, with a for sale sign on the back..
