I have not posted on here before but read the postings daily. On Friday I had to make the hearbreaking decision to have 1 of my beautiful twin girl chihuahuas PTS aged 9yrs and 4 months Although they had their moments fighting and bickering (like all sisters) they adored each other. For the last two and a half years Ellie  has suffered from epilepsy which had got progressively worse. Initially she was having about 1 single fit every 4 or 5 weeks. Despite this she continued to enjoy herself and gave  endless pleasure. The severity of the fits changed and she began to have clusters of the wicked things. These started to take its toll on her and whilst she wasnt as sharp as she used to be she was still Ellie. The weekend before last she had 10 fits in 24hrs. She recovered but not as well as she had done previously. She was stumbling around and bumping into things and seemed very un-coordinated and I arranged to have more blood taken and tests done. That should have been yesterday.
Last Thursday night I noticed that she was breathing faster than normal but wasnt gasping or anything. She couldnt stand up I decided to bring her down and stay up with her. By 2am I was becoming increasingly concerned and rang the vet. He told me to give her another half of the tablets she had for a heart murmur and see how she was in another hour. She was no better but no worse. At 7am I rung him and told him I was worried and he said he would call on the way to the surgery. He came at 8am and examined her. He didnt seem to concerned about her heart but was concerned that something was happening in her brain. and gave her 2 injections and said he hoped that these would help. They didnt. At 3 oclock I decided to ask him to call on his way home. I couldnt watch my little treasure suffer in this way. She had given me so much. The vet called and examined her and said she was struggling. She had heart failure. The prognosis was poor and so was PTS in the living room whilst I held and comforted her. Her passing was very quick and peaceful.

I am heartbroken that shes gone and heartbroken that I cant explain to Cassie (Ellies twin) Where Ellie has gone. Cassie looks lost. She has nobody to steal dog chews from, nobody to race to the letterbox when the paper comes or the postman comes and nobody to curl up with.

Thank you Ellie for 9yrs and 4 months of joy and happiness you gave. Have fun at Rainbow Bridge. I know you will find lots of friends there. I will take care of your sister.

Loved and missed forever by everyone. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Oh Casselle, i feel for you. I had tears reading your post.

It is very sad when you have to let a dog go but you did the right thing. I saw my friends lab suffer from epilepsy that got progressively worse and robbed poor Jake of his independance and his dignity. Things will get easier with time.

So sorry Casselle,

You have given them both a wonderful life and you can perhaps comfort yourself with that.

As for Cassie, after her initial period of grieving you may find that she develops a slightly different character/ out look on life. She and her sister were two halves of a unit and now as a singleton Cassie may become her 'own person'.

I feel for you and her litle twin it is an awful time but at the same time you are able to stop you dogs suffering  . You did your best by her and  the right thing under the circumstances I think what toolz said is brilliant. Her sister will grieve but a individual side to her personality will also develop and she will have different fun and games with you.
We  have apom/chi pup and can identify with some of the actions you describe they are such lovely dogs and so different from what I expected.
All the best.
