Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / In season but no red blood
- By nutkin [gb] Date 27.07.02 21:51 UTC
I suppose this topic may of been covered in silent seasons.
However I have never had a bitch with a silent season before.
I have a bitch at the moment and she is obviously in season
but only showing slight and I mean slight, brown blood. No red.
She has been like this now for 6 days.
She has had a litter before and never ever had brown blood.
Its usually brown and within hours it changes to bright red, and
is what I would call a normal season. However this one is totally
different. My stud dog is interested but she is not to the date
to be mated yet. So any ideas? Do you think this is a silent season?
Should she not be mated this time? Could their be any bacteria
present? Is it wise to get her checked over by the vet on Monday
or just leave it. Any ideas would be welcome as I said this is something
I have not seen before in my breed.

Hi nutkin, Im afraid I dont know much about silent seasons, but imo I would take her to the vets on Monday anyway, and he will be able to advise you. Also have a smear done to make sure she has no infection. Not only is the fairer to the stud dog, and his owner, but if she does have an infection, there is every chance she wont "take" anyway.

Hi Nutkin,
My Weim bitch finished her third season a few weeks ago. Her first two seasons were normal but with the last one she lost a little brown blood for the first 3-4 days then it changed to red. I think that if the discharge doesnt have a bad odour and she is not "off colour" then she is probably O.K. If you are really worried only a vet can put your mind at rest.

My Cocker has just finished her fist season, she's 7.5mths old, and as far as we could tell didn't bleed at all. We certainly didn't notice any blood although she did have some sort of dishcharge as her back legs were all manky with fluid.

I mentioned it to my vet and all he said was how lucky - no stains anywhere :D

Thanks for your replies.
Everything looks normal apart from the brown blood.
I own the stud dog, and the bitch is owned by my
father but I help him out with the rearing of the pups.
I will advise that the bitch is smeared anyway as I
out of normal practise do this. Its just that in all the
years of owning Weims, I have not come across brown
blood lasting any longer than 3 days. I think she is
a very clean little bitch so she is cleaning herself very
regular. I walked over to see her last night and she
was still the same, and my dog was very interested,
but she is not due to be mated until late this week so
if I tell him to take her and get her smeared tomorrow
it should just be right. In the end day if she is not
right its only 6 months to wait until her next season.
So their is no hurry. She is 5 years old.
Nutkin.
