Topic Dog Boards / Health / My elderly Westie is really ill.....

and I'm so worried about him!! Hes at the vets at the minute on a drip as he is dehydrated. It started yesterday afternoon when he brought back his dinner, he wasn't sick for the rest of the day however from about 10pm onwards last night he was sick about 25 times, in the end he was bringing up just fluid and then nothing at all, I gave him some dog rehydration fluid and he brought that back up. At 8am this morning he drank some water I then took him to the vets where they kept him in. They say it looks like a gastric problem as both my Westies went to the dog groomer on Sat and met other dogs and my young westie has diarrhoea.
The vet says he will need 24 at least on a drip before he rehydrates and he has also had a blood test. Am so so worried, I phoned the vet about an hour ago who said he hadn't been sick all day and was a little perkier however he is still very ill.
I am so worried that this is the end. Anyone been through anything similar? My dog is about 14

I do hope your Westie recovers quickly.  I am sure if it is a bug, which is what it sounds like that,  he will get over it.  I do feel for the poor wee fella he must have felt so wretched.

I have a Westie too and they are very special.

Finger crossed and keep us posted.

I hope the little fellow is alright. He's definitely in the right place at the vets, but if he hasn't been sick for a while that is surely a good sign. Do let us know how it goes when you speak with the vet.

Hi

I'm sorry your boy is ill and hope he recovers soon.

I went through something like this last year - I went to bed at night all was well, the next morning my dog was lifeless - as he has arthritis i thought he had over exerted himself so left him a few hours to see if he perked up, no better, bad stomach - rushed him to the vets. He had Haemaraghic (sorry about spelling) Gastroentiritis - and had to be put on a drip with a large dose of anti biotics.  Very serious but treated quickly and aggressively made a full recovery in a short time...

I hope the treatment goes as well for your westie

Hes still at the vets today on a drip. He hasn't been sick since Sunday night and although he still has diarrhoea it isn't like water as it was yesterday. He ate a meal at the overnight vets but isn't eating today (although my vet is giving him prescription food, the overnight vet gave him chicken and rice).
His kidneys look as though they are ok, my vet says its stomach related he has sent a stool sample off to check if its salmonella. How long did everyone elses dog take to get better. Deefer is now sitting up and is definitely brighter than yesterday.

Good news that Deefer is feeling better. You have to remember that at about 14 he may take a little longer to feel 100% again but things are certainly looking better.

Glad the news is more promising for you now, lets hope for a speedy recovery.

Hes still at the vets on a drip but is eating again. He seemed so lethargic this morning though and floppy. I find out tonight if he can come home or if he has to stay in.
He hasn't had any diarrhoea overnight and up to 2pm this afternoon I don't know if he has been since then.
I am still a little worried as he seemed so depressed. The vet said one of the Nurses had taken him out on the grass and although he was very slow and wobbly he was interested in sniffing.
I really hope he has come through the worst, I can't bear to lose him yet.
