Topic Dog Boards / General / when to neuter?
- By furriefriends Date 28.09.08 16:00 UTC
I would prefer to leave my pom/ chi bitch to after her first season to spay but the vet advises otherwise. My big worry about leaving her is that my gsd is male. He was neutered some 6 months ago but do you think he would still be a risk to her if she does have a season or do you think I should take the vets advice and go for it when she is about 6mths old. His reasons are to do with possible cancers.

The vets will always advise this! But to be honest if you would like to wait then that is fine. Your dog shouldn't be a risk to your bitch as in getting her in whelp. BUT if he decided he would like to mount her (as his urges may still be there) her being such a small breed this may cause her damage. Obviously I don't know your male and don't know his tendencies so I am just thinking of a worst case scenario. If it was me I woudl be inclined to wait as they haven't had time to mature fully. I'm sure you will get lot's of differing replies ;-)

Thanks yes my concern is if he got it into his head to have a go. He is  not usually interested in bitches any more than dogs and not that way.

There is always a chance that even with both animals neutered the dog may attempt to mount the bitch or any other dog or bitch for that matter. However if you are wishing to neuter your bitch for other reasons I would leave it as long as possible but anyway till she is about a year.

Going through this scenario currently.
Male was castrated at the end of July and we are assured that he cant cause a pregnancy.
This is approximatley day 14 since the start of the season (7 months old just!).
My boy is now at his most desperate, barking and trying to mount, her head the bed anything really! But mainly he gets it nearly right it is a very frustrating time (puns not intended) for us all.
He had no previous experience or inclination.
But I have no intention of considering spaying for her until she has 'grown up' in all ways.
Karen :)

I had a similar situation in the past i had a neutard GSD male and a unspayed Jack Russel. I wont say it was easy as it wasnt but I was lucky he was only interested in her when she was at her most fertile. She was as bad as him and given the chance was standing on the settee so he could reach her. But that only lasted about a week. He did go of his food but he wasnt a good eater anyway and he did loose weight but again he wasnt a heavy boy so any loss looked worse than it was. I would much rather do that though than spay a underage bitch.

I have an in-season bitch in the house just now, and a very entire male ;-) :-D

I keep them apart by putting them in cages for the whole time a bitch is in season. At the moment he is in his cage and she is cuddling up to her mum on the sofa, but I will soon give them a change and she will be in her cage, and he will be able to lie down near to her. He cannot quite get to her, poor dog :-) When I go out I either take him with me or put them both in cages and do whatever I need to do (shopping, school run, etc...) as quick as I can. I've done this for all his life and he is used to it, but the few days when a bitch is 'ready' can be very frustrating, and not just for him :-D

Cages are wonderful things when used correctly, and very convenient at this time of year ;-)

As to neutering, I would wait until she has had at least one season, just to make sure that everything has developed properly. And then wait for a couple of months to let everything go back to normal.
