Topic Dog Boards / General / Treadmill for dogs?
- By michele [gb] Date 27.07.02 06:01 UTC
Does anyone know if such a thing exists? My Mum is worried that she can no longer give her little dog the amount of exercise she needs, and will not let anyone she doesn't know take Misty for a walk. She also saw an ad in the Vets by someone offering to walk dogs for £8 per hour~which I think is daylight robbery!
Any ideas anyone?

Hi michelle, yes treadmills for dogs do exsist, I have seen them advertised in the dog press. I believe they are well over £1,0000 though

Hi Michele

When I was very pregnant (and ill) and could not give my young Dobe the exercise she needed I would throw her ball up (or down) the stairs, a game she loved, this way a short walk would suffice as most of her energy had already been expended

There is the link for you not quite as cheap as I thought but they do have them so have a browse.

the slatmills (wooden slat belt) which are for sale on the site are ok if you have a dog powerful enough to turn them but a small animal would not really manage it, they are intended really for strong dogs (bull terriers).for smaller dogs you use an electric mill for humans but need to modify by boarding the sides so dog can not jump off.the dog needs to be tied to the spot from 2 points 1 at the front and one at the rear so it can not come off the mill from either end.a mill is a good tool to get a dog fit but before running it the dog should be totally emptied out so it still requires walking a little.you can pick up electric mills from about £300 on ebay auctions.

Hi there

PLease don't mind me mentioning this, but a walk to a dog is not just exercise, but provides mental health and a "break" too - dogs need to get out just as we do!!

I am sorry if this sounds obvious, but perhaps a friendly neighbour could help out....I do understand the dilemma, I wouldnt let just any one take my dog out - not even the mother "in -law" :D

See JOG A DOG

http://www.jogadog.com

They have 3 treadmills, 1 for each size dog.

Hello Michelle,

Sorry to hear about the situation with your Mum and her dog. As Lindsay said, taking exercise is not simply a case of exercising the body, it is mental stimulation, the thrill of exploration!

Has your Mum made any dog owning friends, that her dog enjoys the company of. She could then explain the situation, and invite Owner and dog round for a coffee and play - Coffee for Owner - play for dog ;)

This way the two dogs could have a nice play in the garden, whereby your Mum's little dog would have exercise and happy mental stimulation.

Could your Mum manage a walk 'round the block'? Even a simple walk like that on the lead, would be exercise and interesting for her dog.

All the best,
Denise.
