Hi guys

I really want a career change and want to become a child social worker specialising in fostering and adopting.  Can any on tell me if they have done this later in life and how they went about doing it?  Im based in scotland and not sure if that makes any difference?

You need to see if you have enought gcses grade c or above
Contact your local uni and speak to addmissions for social care
You could do a local access course which is the eqv of 3 a levels , you can do this part time or FT at a collge

Hope this helps

God luck

if you don't have enough qualifications or haven't studied for a while you can do an access course and then the 4 year degree course.  I think most uni's in Scotland do it but Dundee and Stirling spring to mind as decent ones for social work.

i've a friend doing it at dundee uni, loves it! another of my friends is qualified from dundee, she found a job almost straight away and really enjoys it. she does transition work- between adult and child.

Cool thanks guys, I have already been to uni once and got s HND in Business Finance accounting and Law.  An also done an access course for teacher training, I just feel social work would be something I feel I can really get my teeth into and try to make a huge difference.  I will have to research which Unis are closest as I live right on the border of Scotland in a place called Eyemouth so its quite far from most places lol.

you might have to pay your fees if you have already been to uni at a level similar to or above the level you would start your degreee at IYSWIM?  You might have to pay fees for the first year but it has been a while since I have been to uni so not sure about the current financial set up.

Eyemouth is just lovely - was there on Saturday ;).   My sister is a social worker and she went to Edinburgh Uni and she got her fees paid.  It wasn't her first degree either, she had done another one at Sheffield years earlier that was nothing to do with social work, think it was history.  Look into all the financing options to see what's available.  I think she loves the job but it is hellish hard work.
