been a bit of a lurker on here for ages, but i just wanted some advice on weaning my pups. i have a toy breed, and she had 5pups. they're 19 days old, and i know i need to start weaning them at about 3 weeks.....but there's so much conflicting advice on the net! do i mash up puppy food (ie pedigree chum puppy) with water, or baby cereal mixed with water or milk?
and how many times a day do i want to be doing this to start off with? i know they need to be on 4meals a day by the time they're about 6-7 weeks old, just didn't know if i start them on that at start of weaning, as they'll still be feeding off mum as well

Hello - I have toys too.

Tinned food would be too rich for them to be weaned on to.  Burns do a good puppy mini bite kibble that is suitable from 3 weeks, alternativley use a really good quality puppy kibble (JWB/RC) but make sure it is really well soaked.  I soak this in a little warm water for around half an hour until it is like mush, add some puppy formula, make sure it is warm and then for the first few days you will have to dot a tiny bit on their upper lip and then hopefully watch them lick if off furiously.  I do this with each one around six times a day for a few days before I let them eat from a dish.  And it's not an instant thing, they may seem full of puppy mush, but they'll still go to mum for a suckle, you'll find something that works for you once you've captured their interest in food and you can start varying the menu a little bit.

thanks mini....i've just had some samples of JWB sent to me, so i'll give that a go in a few days. i'm trying so hard not to get attached to them all, as i'm only keeping one, but it's so hard!

It's hard, but you just have to make sure that you find the right homes for them and that makes it quite rewarding.

PS - > as i'm only keeping one - I've heard that so many times before :)

Oh and the JWB Turkey flavour is a good size kibble for toy breed pups once they are able to chew
