- By SharonM Date 09.09.08 07:15 UTC
Your pups are due to be wormed again now, have you wormed mum too?
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 09.09.08 07:42 UTC
We used Drontal on ours. Like Sharon says, the mum will need worming too, check with the vet too.
- By suepei [gb] Date 09.09.08 07:43 UTC Edited 09.09.08 07:52 UTC
I always use panicur puppy paste,it is easy to use.
I also worm mum with panicur 10% from about 40 plus days.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 09.09.08 07:50 UTC
sorry yes mum is being mum also at the same time as pups x
- By wendy [gb] Date 09.09.08 08:06 UTC
same as supei - Panacur Puppy Paste and the dosage is spread over 3 days for each worming session and to date all my pups have been fine with this with no upset tum.
- By Blossom [gb] Date 09.09.08 08:13 UTC
It is normal to worm mum from 40+ days whilst she is carrying the pups.
- By Em Date 09.09.08 08:19 UTC
yes its normally advisable to worm from 42 days onwards!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 09.09.08 09:15 UTC
....and Until 3 days after pups are born.  Then when pups are wormed.

All pups are born with worms developing in them, if bitch wormed the burden will be less but they will still have them which is why the pups have to be wormed several times before going to new homes and then regularly each month for the first 6 months and less often after that.
- By annastasia [gb] Date 09.09.08 11:00 UTC
Hi White Lilly, i always use drontal puppy suspension with no problems, only 1 litter touch wood had a few worms, hopefully this next dose you will get rid of them, your right they are horrid, make me feel sick
- By malibu Date 09.09.08 15:15 UTC
I too use panacur paste, used to use drontil for a while but switched back as old habits die hard and I dont think you can beat panacur for puppies.

Whichever treatment you use, follow guidelines and worm regulary.  As any treatment will work if given time.

just got back from vets and pups are fine we used drontil again and the pups now weigh 2kg :)!!!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 10.09.08 08:00 UTC
ok i have a question for you breeders please :) .... puppys are now in a puppy pen so thay carnt escape lol but i have to let mum in out to feed them ...thay are 4weeks and 2days old today im going to stop mum feeding them so much in the day so they will eat alittle more and give them 4meals and see how thay go !!! but at what age do you stop mum feeding them thro the night ? i have to keep letting her in and out she dont want to be in there !!! as soon as shes feed them she barking and going mad to get out ,if i didnt wake up to put her in she wouldnt want to go into them ,so what age shell i stop her feeding them in the night ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.09.08 08:08 UTC
I don't prevent mum having access to her pups at any time, other than for half an hour after she's been fed so that she doesn't regurgitate her food to help wean them.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 10.09.08 08:38 UTC
i know what your saying but i have to keep the pups safe too ,i know there not MY pups ,and i have to keep there mum away when im feeding them or she would eat it herself , she is in the same room with them she just dont want to feed them at NIGHT
- By cocopop [gb] Date 10.09.08 08:57 UTC
Does your puppy pen not have a gate that has a higher level gate and a lower one so mum can get in and out but not the pups?
If not maybe you could improvise with a piece of wood. :-)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 10.09.08 09:05 UTC
hi cocopop ive tried :( for the pups not to get out it has to be high and mum carnt get in without hurting the pups :( i will try the wood again thankyou !x
- By Isabel Date 10.09.08 09:50 UTC
I would not restrict the bitches access either.  You just have to be there to keep letting her in and out and them in and out to the garden now as well.  After a lull of a week or two I'm afraid this is the stage when it all get very hard work again and very demanding on your time but it doesn't last for ever and they will start being great fun now too :-)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 10.09.08 10:50 UTC
hi isabel ,im with mum and puppies 24/7 :) but sadly i carnt put them in the garden because of the rain !! its so bad here ,they are running around the living room and pooing and weeing all over the place im trying to put them on papper but 6 little monsters running around can be hard ....and can i say i dont mind the poos and wees we have a very good carpet clearner lol lol , its just at night time my hubby as just gone to get some different sizes of ply to see how high we can go so mum can get into them and pups carnt get out ,i carnt stay up all night to make sure they dont get out and hurt them selfs ,
so this is why i asked about night times :) :) x
- By Isabel Date 10.09.08 10:54 UTC
At this age they have to be able to get out of their pen unless it is ginormous! :-)  I live in the North West so well used to rain ;-) sometimes you just have to let them out.  They will come to no harm if you do not have them out to long, 10 mins at a time and dry them all off well with a rough towel and get them back into the warm.  Other than that would they not be better in the kitchen or somewhere with a washable floor?  It would make life so much easier for you.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.09.08 11:00 UTC
A friend of mine used to have a box each side of the puppy pen so that Mum (and other adults) could hop in and out but the pups couldn't escape otherwise you will have to be at Mums beck and call when she wishes to go in and out.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.09.08 11:10 UTC

> but sadly i carnt put them in the garden because of the rain !!

I don't understand how you can possibly not let them in the garden.  I have a litter who are now 6 1/2 weeks and no way could I keep them penned indoors full time after 4 1/2 weeks of age.

Pups need room to run around, will also object to being confined so that they have to poo close to where they sleep, and of course need the benefits of fresh air, including a bit of rain.

If you haven't got as purpose built kennel some form of shelter can be provided in the shape of one of those garden stores,a  Wendy house etc, so they have somewhere dry to lie down in between bouts of play, otherwise your going ob be spending every waking hour taking pups in and out of the garden a nd drying them and the floors off.

Now if when I bring them into the indoor pen they create merry hell after a very short time to be allowed into their more roomy premises (10 x 6 foot kennel and 12 x 10 foot run), by 8 weeks they will have free run of the area the dogs use (Kitchen and half back garden) in which the dog run is with gate open all the rest of the year.

it cold in the kitchen but its the best place for them :) ive put puppy pen in and some wood up that pups carnt get out ,mum can !! so i can now go to bed YAY!!! pups can have the ru of there now then im with them (all day) and the sun as come out so im going to take them out on the garden when theyve woke up :) :) :) xx
- By Isabel Date 10.09.08 12:38 UTC
The should sufficient coat to cope with a cold room now so long as they have good bedding in a draught free bed.
Brainless, I suspect your pups have very good thick coats, even at this age, and would suit very nicely being left to come and go at will in wet weather but I am not sure that I would comfortable with spaniels as young as this not being dried off before they settle down to sleep.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 10.09.08 12:50 UTC
there coats are not thick so i carnt let them come and go ,i only put them in the pen and it is a big one to sleep they play out side of it with us and our kids , (not babys) there on vet bed with carpet underneth it , at night i will cover our back door over to stop any drafts , our dog kennel out side isnt finished yet (was surpost to be :( by now ) so i will have to manage the best i can ,the pups do come 1st , and i want the best for them x
- By Liz_R [gb] Date 10.09.08 13:34 UTC
I put my pups in a large blow up paddling pool to play. They are in the kitchen when I'm in there, but on an evening they come into their pool in the living room with us. Obviously it's waterproof, but I put puppypads at one end as I like them to get used to using them. Mum can jump over the top to get in if she wants as there's plenty of room for her to see whats going on and not land on a puppy. It wouldn't work for the large breeds for very long, but it's great for smaller type pups. Oh, and I don't get up in the night to check on them after they are about a week old. Mums usually have the idea by then and can cope perfectly well.

> there coats are not thick so i carnt let them come and go

I know it is hard work but you do need to be getting them out as much as possible now.  They need it for their mental and physical development including the growth of adequate coats to cope with the elements.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 10.09.08 14:19 UTC
yes they will be going out to play but not on there own ,i not let them come and go ,i will be out there with them :) :)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 11.09.08 11:44 UTC
one of the puppies still seem worm bound ive rang vets and im going at 2 thay told me about milbemax puppy and i think we are going to try this ,has any1 eles used this for there pups and is it any good?
- By barneyfoz [gb] Date 11.09.08 13:35 UTC Edited 11.09.08 15:34 UTC
Hi white lilly, my pups are older old now and i have them in a puppy play pen, i have it next to a chair and what my bitch does to get in is she jumps onto chair to get in and out so she has access to them whenever she wants without them roaming around living room all the time, i wouldnt be without my puppy pen as i know they are safe in there.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 11.09.08 17:43 UTC
hi barneyfoz , yes so true the safty of the pups is the most importent thing !! :) ,there in the kitchen now with mum she can get in and out (ive put some wood up at the door ) but this will only hold them for another week for night time so they will then get the run of the kitchen lol they can only chew my kithcen cupards lol lol lol lol ,ive got loads of toys for them but its me they want to chew lol lol ,x
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.09.08 18:08 UTC

> I suspect your pups have very good thick coats, even at this age

They certainly have very thick coats but they are like sponges and certainly need drying off if they get wet, but of course they do have shelter and the sense not to get completely soaked.

I am of course changing their Vet bed often when it is wet like this, as well as rubbing them down, there is just no way they would tolerate being confined indoors though.

Demented Seagulls is what they sound like if unhappy ;)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 11.09.08 20:08 UTC
hi brainless thankgod im not sound ike that :) thay love playing in the kitchen with us and now the other dogs are joining in the fun with them too :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.09.08 20:51 UTC
Could you not put up a Gazebo in the garden so that they could run around and stay fairly dry?  It would help them wear themselves out with playing ;)  OH bought one very cheaply at the end of summer a few years back ;)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 11.09.08 21:05 UTC
yes i will do that :) at the mo they are droping like flys after 20 mins of playing with us but i know its not goig to be long before the kitchen isnt enough for them :) but i do have a big one !!!lol lol ;)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.09.08 04:18 UTC
Now a gazebo does sound like an idea, you could put  a dog bed in a large box on it;s side for a bed avoiding draughts, and they would be able to enjoy some fresh air and exercise..

In the garden though you need to bear in mind that small pups can get into and through small gaps, so I would always have an outdoor puppy pen or dog run until they get to over 8 weeks or that sort of size if a medium size breed.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 12.09.08 07:58 UTC
our dog run is nearly done :) :) :) :)

our puppies have got the runs and are being sick now ,1 was on drip 2nights ago and yesterday had to take another :(:( im so worried about them and now 2 more are starting with it :(:( dont know how they have got this ? the kitchen is very clean im doing it all the time ...out side is concreate and jet washed for them !! the little 1 thats in now was very poorly when we took him :( the other was not as bad and he came home after 1 night ...not sure how long this 1 will have to stay in yet ,thay were wormed with dronital on tues lunch time ...thats when the 1st started so it carnt be the wormer can it ?
- By Goldmali Date 24.09.08 23:26 UTC
It can be the wormer. It's fairly common for pups to have a small reaction to being wormed, but it also does happen that some pups get really ill from certain types of wormers. If you ask around breeders, I'm sure you'll find some people that have had major problems when using Drontal, others have had the same problems with Panacure etc. I have definitely spoken to people who have had problems with both, as well as people who have had NO problems with either. I hope your pups will be alright, but would suggest for next time use a different wormer just in case!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.09.08 06:42 UTC
thankyou marianneB ,i will use a different 1 next time ,but the runs started before the wormer was given with 1 of them (1st pup) :(
- By pepsi1 Date 25.09.08 07:48 UTC
Oh no im so sorry your puppies are poorly, fingers crossed they pick up soon and will be ok xx
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.09.08 11:01 UTC
I had huge problems once with Panacur which I still use and this litter have never got loose at all from it, where as the odd pup in most litters has had a mild reaction.

Have also known people have bad reactions with Drontal.
- By lincolnimp [gb] Date 25.09.08 12:01 UTC

> the runs started before the wormer was given with 1 of them

In that case, there could well have been an infection incubating, and the stress of the wormer might have made it worse.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.09.08 12:45 UTC
yes i think this is the case :( been and got the little 1 back from vets he is still a little off but 100 times better then he was :) ,the others poos are a little runny but seen ok in themselfs so im checking them every 30mins  in the day / hourly through the night for the next 48hours ,im so tired and this as been the worse time out of 3 litters its gone from bad to worse from her giving birth ...so glad this is her last litter could never go through this again ...i rang the lady that is having this little 1 to tell her hes home and is on the mend ...bless her she was so worried about him as i was last night ...i didnt think he was going to make it but he as and im so releaved , so please keep all your fingers crossed for me please the others will be ok too :) x x x x
- By annastasia [gb] Date 25.09.08 15:02 UTC

- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 25.09.08 16:02 UTC
We've lost pups in the last 2 litters of Pomeranian's after using Drontal, no problems with the Spanish though!  Was an extremely awful death too, not one I would wish on anyone!
- By annastasia [gb] Date 25.09.08 16:41 UTC
OMG thats awful, i always use drontal, was it the puppy suspension or tablets? my heart goes out to you.
