Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / IBS in dogs re breeding??
- By beagirl [gb] Date 06.09.08 07:41 UTC
Hi there,
I have had my 1yr old beagle girl for a couple of months now and she has developed some kind of hypersensitivity to some foods, IBS or some kind of cronic bowel problem (my vet is still running tests!!). She has been doing well in the show ring and i bought her with the view to show and in a year or so breed from her.
I just wondered if anyone knew if things like hypersensitivity to food stuffs is genetic and would stop me breeding from her? I forgot to ask the vet (i was more concerned what was wrong with her) but would like to know if i should rethink my plans for this lovely girl.
Thanks

Certainly I would be researching among her parents lines and her siblings to see if this is a problem that has occurred before.

I agree research her parents, grand parents, etc.  In humans IBS hasnt been confirmed as hereditary but new research is being done all the time.  So I guess it shouldnt be in dogs but would double check her lines just in case, if it is present in only one relative you could look for a line (stud dog) with a cast iron gut to reduce the chances of puppies having it.

IBS or IBD having used the word "Cronic" which means it could be IBD which is a really serious thing to have.  It is and so is IBS generally caused by immune system problems.  I would seriously reconsider this bitch in a future breeding problem. It would be a last resort to most even to consider it..

I know it is touch but they will reproduce it.

I agree with Blue  I have a bitch with IBD and now has anal furunculosis I would not even consider breeding from her, when she is finished with her course of immunosuppressant drugs and steroids she will be spayed. There is no hereditary evidence but there may be a predisposition to IBD I personally woudnt take the chance.

Gut problems are not always genetic - many are environmental.  Many food allergies and intolerances we are seeing in people today are not down to their genes it's all to do with what they are exposed to in the womb and also the additives in out foods.  My IBS is strictly stress related!  So long as everything is going smoothly and I am not worried about anything, I can eat whatever I want.  My mum's dog's parents were fed on a raw/barf diet of mainly red meat.  Mum's dog can't eat red meat, she is allergic.  The slightest thing can upset gut flora, which also affects our/their digestion and absorbtion.

IBD and IBS are totally different IBD is a disease i.e. Crohns disease, Ulcerative colitis in humans,Immune system diseases ,which are treated with immunosuppressants Whereas IBS can be stress related or food intolerance itll depend on the tests being done on the bitch as to which she actually has.I do think that additives have a lot to do with IBS and IBD though, my bitch who has anal furunculosis has now got food intolerance and is on a restricted diet,Aparently AF is very similar to crohns disease,
They think that people can be predisposed to these diseases so could maybe be the same in dogs?!! Its all a bit of  grey area really

When you consider these things are prevelent in certain breeds rather than others you feel there must be a genetic component there.

There is much written about both IBS and IBD and it has been suggested that they are made worse by stress of all kinds, I can't help wondering whether would it be sensible to try to breed from a bitch with these problems?  After all pregnancy and caring for her pups are a huge stress on a bitches system ;)

Hi, Still waiting on results to come back but thank you for all of your replies. I have contacted the breeder who has had many generations of our dogs line and she assures us they have had no problems. I've been non stop reading up on these conditions online and i have come to the conclusion that there is no way i will be breeding from this girl. THere is no point risking it if any puppies may have similar probems. She would be my foundation bitch and i don't want to start of badly with this breed, i want to build up a good reputation. :0)
Hopefully when the results come back it won't be anything too serious.
Thanks
