Topic Dog Boards / Health / normal tail?

Hi There

I have a 3 year old  (spayed) choc lab bitch.  Since yesterday she hasnt lifted her tail - it wags still but at 6o'clock rather that 3o'clock if you get me.  Id had a look at her tail and it seems ok but she is very curious as to me touching it - shes not in pain.  I took her for a walk this morning and  though she met other dogs, her tail was still at the 6o'oclock position, very low to her body but not under her body.  Does anyone have any ideas why - could she has sprained her tail?  Shes never done this before.  Her tail hasnt been up since late yesterday afternoon.  Even when we give her attention, her tail is still low. Any ideas will be appreciated

Sounds very much like limber tail. Best to do nothing and it will recover.

sounds like Limber Tail - although Ive never heard of it.  She still wags her tail, so I was sure it wasnt broken.  It looks odd as Im not used to seeing it permanetly low.  Thanks for that, as going to take her to verts tomorrow but will leave it a while longer and see how she gets on.

Ive googled "Limber Tail" but not sure if I should walk her at all.  She will be soooo bored.  Maybe just a gentle half hour a day till I can see improvement.  Some recommend anti-inflam and some say it will get better on its own.  Shes not a working dog and isnt over exersized but she has recently spent 2 weeks in the kennels and we have walked her as normal.  Maybe thats caused it, although the kennels do walk thier dogs, they're on lead so its not the same.....thanks again:-)

My springer gets this sort of tail when he's had a bath! Its very strange as its the only time his tail gets it, he can swim in the river no problems but if he has a bath with shampoo etc  his tail goes all limp for about 24hrs and recovers completely on its own accord.

Jeangenie is right. It sounds very much like Limber Tail, (also known as Dead Tail), it will get better by itself. It sometimes happens when dogs have been swimming or have just been in season, (though that won't apply in your case).

Yes my Henry (LAB) had this not long ago.  I was horrible to see a lab without a waggy tail.

It corrected itself within 24 hours.  I put a warmed up towel on the base of it to help.

Hope it gets back to full wagginess soon!
