My cairn is 4 and I have been working on his recall since I bought him home as a 4 month old pup. At home his recall is fairly good but on walks he becomes "deaf" I have tried all sorts and followed lots of advice but have never managed to crack it. He is walked on a long line as if he sees another dog off he goes oblivious to my calls. Last week we had been for a lovely walk and in a small field where I can see all entrances my OH persuaded me to let him off his lead. We were playing together and having such a good time I completely missed 2 weimaraners a golden retriever and a border collie come into the field (I must have been blind to miss that little lot!). Toby spotted them first and began to run towards them, as usual I called him expecting him to carry on but he hesitated for a split second then turned and came back to me! I am so proud of him, at last all of his training has not been in vain. I am still not completely confidant in his recall but he has since twice come when called when other dogs have been around. To anyone feeling as I did that recalls were what other dogs did, never give up. I am one proud mummy!!

That's fantastic.  Maybe there's hope for my border after all :)  I must keep at it as your perseverence has paid off.

That is absolutely wonderful, well done!

Just a thought but do you allow him to still play with other dogs, if he enjoys it?

You can even use his coming back and then letting him go again with an "Ok!" as a reward, (not wording it very well, sorry - I mean sending him off again to play after he's returned to you is a good reward!).
