Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Mis mating injection after effects

I have a dog and a bitch who I have mated previously with success. Unfortunately when my bitch had her next season there was a mishap and they managed to do the deed.  I contacted my vet immediately and the bitch was taken in for a jab and then another one so many days later, all was well she seemed to have no ill effects from the jab and came into season 6 months later.  On this occasion I wanted to mate her to keep a puppy for myself, everything was done as the first time they were mated, I had an incling she was not pregnant but took her for a scan at 5 weeks to be sure and as I suspected there were no pups.  I have now found several articles about this form of canine contraception causing cysts, pyometra and infertility does anyone have any experience of this ???  My vet never told me of any side effects and if the above is true I now feel the decision I made was not a well informed one as it was always my intention to breed again for another pup to keep.

Hi Finnhill

It depends on which mismate shot she was given as to which side effects can occur.

I had a young 15 month old bitch mismated 18 months ago with Alazine. She was recently mated and produced 10 healthy puppies.

Alazine is given twice with 24 hours apart. It does not have as nasty side effects as the old one that was used.

Our bitch was "got" on her first season when the dog next door jumped over our gate (grrrrr!). She was 13 months old at the time and we mated her 18 months later once, and she went on to have 12 healthy puppies.
I can't remember which drug it was but I did research it at the time and the vet told me it increased the risk of pyometra but to me that was a lesser risk than her having mixed breed puppies at under 18 months old.
Your vet should have told you but did you ask?

like wylie said it does depend on what she was given.  Some of the old fashioned drugs used to have a knock on affect on future pregnancies.  Some taking up to 1 - 2 years for bitches to be able to get pregnant again.  But that was the old ones, never known any problems with the newer drugs.  But without knowing what was used it is hard to say.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your replies !  I am rather embarrased to say that I did not ask the side effects of this drug as the vet made it sound all so very straight forward.  I will phone my vet first thing tomorrow to ask exactly what drug my bitch was given.  I also wondered if maybe the season she has just had may not have been a full blown season, she is a very receptive bitch and to be honest when she is in season has been known to be all over human men as well as the canine variety lol. So even though we know the dogs definately tied on 3 occasions maybe the timing was not right.

I used Mesalin on my bitch 3 years ago but didn't work and we ended up with 12 healthy puppies. My friend has used Alizin and mated at the next season and had 9 puppies

Hi Everyone

Double checked with my vet which jab my bitch was given and it was Alazine, so I am very relieved to say the least.  Maybe her season was not a full blown season is this possible ???  She did appear to be in pup after a few weeks all the usual signs enlarged teats and so forth but she then went completely of her food and then on being scanned there was nothing present, could she have reabsorbed them at 4-5 weeks gestation.  Very confused by it all, but at least I now know that the mis mating injection she had has very few side effects if any. +

Thank you for your replies
