Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Am I starving my pup?

Hi I have a four month male staffie, at the moment I am feeding him Natures puppy diet 1 pack a day, mixed with 109 grams of AG puppy/junior. I spread this over three meals. His last weighing was 7.2kg. My problem is he is scoffing his food really quickley and then looking for more, should I feed him more or is he having enough for his age & weight.
Also when out walking he tries to eat anything he can find, grass cuttings, leaves, sticks, stones etc, is this normal puppy behaviour or is it because his not having enough food?

It's certainly normal for dogs to scoff their food down quickly, if mine don't I start to worry they're ill. And it's normal for puppies to pick up everything they can on walks :-) As to whether you're feeding your dog enough nobody can answer this, all dogs are individuals and guidelines on food packs are just that - guidelines. How does your boy look?

I also feed AG puppy, however have a large breed. The recommended daily amount for me is between 400-800grams (the top end of that seems a lot to me) so maybe just check the recommended daily amount for your pups weight... I am guessing 200-500grams of AG/day? Also, if you can, check with your breeder and see what they recommend and also what they think the ideal weight for your boy at his age is.

As mentioned before, it's normal for pups to pick up all sorts of different things, the more disgusting the more they like it! However if he is actually searching out grass, leaves, sticks and just munching them down as though they were food, I might be inclined to bump up his food a bit.

If you still have no joy, maybe speak to your vet and see what they think. No doubt they will advise you start feeing a different brand (the one they promote) - but if they confirm he is in good shape/weight then maybe he just loves his food!!

I am sure there are other Staff owners who will pitch in some ideas too... best of luck!

I feed my adults between 150g - 200g of AG adult and pups would never have more than 250g a day and the breed are 20kg as adults.

If your feeding similar volume of the wet food as the 109g of AG I would think he is getting about the right amount.

You need to feel his body every week can you easily feel his ribs and a waist without playing the washboard?  If so then he is fine.

I find the recomendatiosn on the fodo far too high as with msot others and feed abotu 2/3rds to 3/4s of the amounts.

Only way to know is to weigh him regularly.  If he is gaining each week then he is OK if he is losing then you need to increase.  I find the back of the packets to always estimate to much, especially on the dry food.  I have a 7 month old pup at the moment and she is gaining fine but does eat her meals really, really quickly.  And also tries to eat everything, I just watch her like a hawk when she is out so she doesnt pick up anything.  One of our others didnt grow out of this until 12 months old.

Hi thanks for all of your replies,
my boy looks pretty good, a nice shiney coat, ribs are not showing but easy to find. I have no concerns with the way he looks just that he seems to be hungry all the time.
I gave him 3/4 of a packet of nautres puppy diet this morning which he scoffed down quickley as usual, I think if I had given it to him he would have managed the whole packet.
I did however find that he did not try to eat everything in sight on his walk this morning, he still picks up the odd stick or stone but nothing like he was doing before.
I hope I am doing the right thing with the food increase and that I don't end up with a barrel for a dog.

A dog will eat a whole crate of food quickly because dogs will eat everything and anything, you have to be the one to regulate it.  This is how a lot of pets get fat.
Keep him on the increase for now but keep a close eye on his weight, if he is increasing too quickly then cut it back again.

Many if not most dogs would eat until they burst.  Nature has designed them to eat as much as they can when they can as it is never certain when the next meal may be.

It is pretty much impossible to over feed a puppy as they grow do quickly but u can try feeding him a bit more.

I would not agree, I have seen many a pup carrying too much weight to the detriment of their bone structure.

Likewise I agree, some puppies can be too fat.  Not good for development.  Also if you feed to much as a pup you can stretch the stomach making them even more hungry all the time!
