5 out of 9 of the pups are dehydrated ,taking them to vets in morning but what can i give them tonight ? is cool boiled water enough ? or is there anything eles i can give them , im worried sick . thankyou
- By Isabel Date 14.08.08 18:49 UTC
I don't think I would leave it to the morning that is a long time for a small puppy.  Why are they dehydrated?  Have you checked their mouths?  Are the other four hogging all the milk or are you rotating who gets on the best teats?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 14.08.08 18:53 UTC
im doing it all ,im sure its the heat , its the small 2 and big 2 ,so i just dont know ive check there mouths
- By carole [gb] Date 14.08.08 18:56 UTC

- By Isabel Date 14.08.08 19:05 UTC
Yes, don't leave it.

My pups last year were a little dehydrated as mums milk was thick being colostrum so i just topped them up with whelpi or lactol.

Doesnt your vets do an out of hours service? If not look for a vet that does in the yellow pages. Ring them all if needs be, one will be 24hours.

You should always have a few sachets (or more if you have a large breed) of Lectade in your whelping kit http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Lectade-Small-Animal-Sachet-single/productinfo/LECSAS/ in case of emergencies like this.

Please try all the vets though, or you will lose those pups!

How are they this morning? Is it hot where you are cos it's freezing here!
We had 2 dehydrated but they were quite a bit older and ended up staying at the vets with the intention of putting them on a drip. In the event they couldn't get the drip in so they had to be syringed with lectade every 30 minutes. They were fine but we were lucky.

Praying for your pups...

- By LindyLou [gb] Date 16.08.08 08:40 UTC
Is this one of the dehydrated ones? She might just not have any strength to suck. If she hasn't fed properly previously then I'm afraid there may be an underlying problem. So sorry to hear you're having such a bad time of it.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 16.08.08 10:53 UTC
spoke with vet again ,she said its not looking good ,thay have put her to sleep ,it was the best thing for her ,i dont want her suffering till she died (god bless little angel)

So sorry for your loss ,sleep peacefully little one.
- By annastasia [gb] Date 16.08.08 11:56 UTC
I know what you are going through, we had a small male that was not suckling, every 2 hours i were syringing welpi into him and every 4 hours a puppy survival serum, but sadly he lost his fight at 5 dys old, its heartbreaking, touch wood the others are all doing fine, thinking of you
- By PippaJ [in] Date 16.08.08 12:06 UTC

White lilly
We are sorry for your loss too,  hope that the other puppies just go from strength to strength now and that you can find some peace
All the best for the next few days
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 16.08.08 08:51 UTC
Your IP and details say that you are in the UK, can I ask what heat?  The UK at the moment isn't really basking in sunshine.  Have you got heating pads etc on the?  Sounds as though there's more going on and I'd want a more thorough checkup.

Hope pups are much better.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 16.08.08 09:11 UTC
hi perrodeague ,just rang them ,shes still not sucking ,its not hot here now ,all other pups are doing well now just the small one ,thay want me to go and get her and seringe feed her but i just know shes not going to live ,i just dont know what to do !!!!!! do i tell them to put her tosleep or do i feed her ? god i dont know
- By Angels2 Date 16.08.08 09:25 UTC
I agree with Perrodeagua if it was me and I was worried whether one of my pups would survive i would be getting the vets to thoroughly check them over and if I wasn't happy then i'd ask to see another vet.

Fingers crossed for you

((((((((((((((white lilly))))))))))))))))
So sorry to har you're having trouble.
I hope you've got lots of help and support.
I'd let the vet guide you - if they think it's worth feeding the pup then it's got to be worth a try.
Good luck, thinking of you and your pups, let us know what happens.

Hi White Lily
Fading puppy syndrome is usually caused when organisms with are normally present in the alimentary canal become pathogenic for no known reason. The bug builds up and very quickly becomes lethal. The usual culprit is E-coli. Separate any puppies which appear to be fading and try syringe feeding with a little live yoghurt, thinned down if neccessary with a small amount of boiled and cooled water. Feed this hourly and at blood temperature. It's many years since I had this problem and your vet may have an anti-biotic which can help. Good Luck

Hi White Lily

Google this website its called fit and fertile, they sell something called puppy survival, its colostrum in a tube, it didnt help our fading puppy but it could help yours, i believe it is wonderful stuff, sometimes a congenital defect could make them fade then it is hopeless, but give it atry at least you know you have done all you can the, also buy some welpi its the closest thing to mothers milk, good luck i know how stressful and upsetting it is losing puppies, i have just been there, litter of 11,, 3 were stillborn and the 4th was the puppy that faded, istruggled for 2 days/nights feeding him puppy survival(every 4 hours) and (welpi every )  we  have 7 remaining puppies all thriving now.
Good luck with them, you know where we all are if you need us.P.S the guy on the website is very good in what he does, i know him personally as he scans my females at the house, he recommends to give this colostrum to every new born puppy to give them the best start in life, also to give mother a shot whilst welping as it gives energy also, i now have a supply in for next time.
