Topic Dog Boards / General / Is a 6+ hr day out too much for a puppy?

Hey Guys and Gals :) :)

I have a question thats been driving me mental lol

As you all know I have our new bundle called Turbo who is now 5 months old and is coming along really nicely with his form and his training too, couldnt ask for more for his age :)

We were planning to go to the Suffolk Doggy Day this Saturday  and thought we would take him too, but I didnt realise it lasts from 12 till 5 and counting travel time we would be out for about 6/7 hours altogether.
Is that too much for a puppy to handle when their only 5 months old?
I dont want his legs becoming stressed and he is going to be going crazy for all the other dogs there but can I be assured that the same amount of control will be enforced at this day as a Open show etc? IE dogs wont be biting each other or pulling at leads all uncontrollable as its just a show out on its own and not a champ show etc with professional judges etc?
I want Turbo to use this as a socialising trip but think it may over due him and be too stressful on him and his legs.

What does everyone else think?
Or am I just being an overprotective mummy lol :)

All views welcome as its only 2 days away and I need to make a decision, if we dont take him we wont go so it really is just for him!

PS Does anyone know what the weather is going to be like this Saturday as that may make my decision for me :)

Weather is going to be wet, I dont expect you will be walking solidly for 5/6 hours if hes weary can you carry him for a bit (or is he a big breed) and a lunch time sleep would probably corresond with your lunch time. We always took the pups with us and it did lead to a really quiet nights.

I would go and see how he is, if he seems tired or stressed I presume you would be able to leave before the end?
Don't know about the weather, but take a bottle of water so he can have a drink when you get there.:-)

OK we will go and check it out and see how we go!
Because he's a Stafford Im worried about his legs, I dont want him to have bowed back legs from over walking!
Better safe the sozza as I say lol

I think its meant to be pouring on Saturday so may not even be able to go after all this lol But will try to get there for a few shows, we always take water and the promise und of a quiet night sounds real good! :)

I agree, if you can carry him, or at least settle somewhere with a folding chair and a rug or crate for him to rest in, he should be ok, and you always have the option of leaving early. :-)

Took my 3 month old to Bakewell Show and she had a ball.  Though we didn't do to much walking and just took her at her own pace.

Hi Rach

I'd do as the others say, go anyway but obviously leave early if you feel its too much for him after a while.

I'm contemplating a similar thing - its a local game fair this weekend and a nice day out for dogs, I'm thinking of taking our Samoyed providing the weathers not too hot (don't think there's much chance of that though!) When we first got her she was so overweight and waddled more than walked, but she's a different dog now so I think she would relish the chance of a day out as she's a very sociable girl. I think I will take her but if she gets too tired or fed up I'll just leave early.

Hope you (and Turbo) enjoy your day :-)
