My new puppy has only been home for 48 hours and he has developed a really upset stomach.

I know he's still settling in and all the changes could upset him but has anyone any ideas?
He is trying really hard to be clean and has only had one wee in the house but he has poo'd a fee times on his way out to the garden. He just can't make it in time.
He's really bright in himself and eating and drinking well.

He goes to the vet for a check up on wednesday so I will mention it then if he's no better.

no food for 24 hours plenty of fluids .

probably the shock of moving to his new home

chicken and rice or potato and salmon  bland food and gradually put  him back onto his puppy food.

If still problem after 24-48 hrs a vet visit maybe best option.

He's a baby, anythink could have upset him from the water change to stress. Did the breeder give you any food to bring home with you? if so stay with that. Ring the breeder.
Lets hope he hasn't got a bug! puppies will dehydrate quick, please be very carefull with him. Don't leave him to long. If he is on dry food just give that for 24hrs.

He's only a baby, so I'd say no food for 12 hours, 24 would be a bit much.

Agree tho', bland food and plenty of fluids.

He seems really well in himself he's eating and drinking well and into everything.

I've not given him breakfast but think I will give him lunch.
He hasn't eaten since 7pm last night so that will be 17 hours.

His breeeder gave me plenty of food and a feeding plan to follow which included goats milk.
He's on Royal Cainin baby dog which I haven't ever used before.

We go to the vets tommorow so I'll talk to him if he's no better.

On a happier note, apart from me getting him up to go to the toilet, he slept through the night without a sound last night.

I would boil his drinking water & let it cool then add glucose & a pinch of salt. This will keep his energy levels up, when you start feeling him again he should be on a bland diet(chicken/white fish boiled in water & rice cooking in the chicken/fish water until it is sticky) & some live bio yoghurt(you can get goats yoghurt-I make my own from goat yoghurt culture & spray dried goats milk) Little & other for food

Can I just add a note of caution.  When my puppy was ill at this age, the vet adviced me NOT to starve her as she was too young to be starved.  And she advised me to give her scrambled eggs.  However, she DID have a bug... it took weeks of a/b's to sort it out.  At this point, I wouldn't think it was a bug.  I would say it's probably the stress of coming home.  I would stick to the food that the breeder gave you and try to get him into a routine ASAP.  Don't worry too much, as long as he is drinking well.  And, like you said, you can double check things at the vet tomorrow.

However, if the stools don't firm up (and believe me, I know all about this as my puppy, possibly due to the complylobacter bug she picked up, has developed a food intolerance and had the runs for 2 months!!) you could gradually change his food.  I've found that the only one that works with my dog, after trying Iams, Burns (both puppy food and pork & potato) is Wafcol Salmon & Potato.

Don't forget your dog is drinking different water, in a new home, stomachs are usually off for quite a few days.

You have already received a lot of good advice, so hopefully you can get your pup back on track asap. My only suggestion would to be cut out the dairy.. even goats milk/yogurt. In my experience, a lot of pups can react badly to dairy in their diet. To maintain good gut health, maybe try 'Feelwells Probiotic Puppy Treats' I know of a few people who have had success with these, and they provide the good bacteria to the gut without the additional dairy. I use them as training treats for my girl and she hasn't looked back. Also, I would make a plan and stick to it. Ie... bland food, no dairy, no raw egg, or anything that may cause an upset. Sometimes it just takes time for their little tummies to get back to being healthy. Best of luck!!

We have just come back form the vets. Hugo is, as far as the vet can tell, fine. No temprature, he's bright and eating and drinking well.

He was happy for us to carry on as we are for now and if it hasn't improved by friday to give him some Kaolin. Hopefully it will improve over the next couple of days.

I've stopped the goats milk and am giving him slightly smaller amounts of puppy food and have been boiling his water.

We've just been back to the vets as despite giving kaolin my puppy is still suffering with diarrhoea.
The vet has put him on a chicken and rice diet, prescribed antibiotics and said to continue with the kaolin.

I'm becoming a little worried now as the vet says he really has no idea whats wrong and I have never had a puppy who has had suffered this badly

I have to go back on thursday, if there is no improvement, and am wondering if I should suggest they test a sample of faeces.

Hi Get your vet to treat him for Coccidia, it is caried in the gut and can cause no problems until the pup becomes stressed by a change of home etc.

I've just been reading up on this on web and i'll definitely mention it to the vet on thursday if there's no improvement.
I'll take a sample with me too.

Our pup had bad tummy issues earlier this year.  Upon doing a faecal test, it was discovered that she had campylobacter and chlostridium perfrengens bacterias in her tum, which were easily treated and she's been as right as rain ever since.  Apparently nearly all dogs carry these bacterias, but some are unaffected. 

Hope you get your pup sorted ASAP, as I know what a worry it is.

You could also try live yoghurt. this can often work miracles. When your puppy has diarrhoea, it is also expelling the good bacteria from the gut, and without these good bacteria, the diarrhoea becomes self-perpetuating. Also, if he is on anti-biotics, they will kill the good bacteria as well as the bad ones.

Just my experience but cooked chicken is just about the only food that gives my dog diarrhea. He can eat chicken raw with no trouble, he can eat chicken based kibble with no trouble but the typical boiled chicken and rice that's recommended for squitty bums would make him worse. Mine isn't the only dog that has this reaction either. Worth asking your vet if you could try fish and rice instead?
