Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Showing & bitch in season
- By Gemma86 [gb] Date 11.08.08 15:12 UTC
I was at a general non group open show over the weekend, not benched etc so dogs were in cages around the ring.
Dogs & bitches were in some classes together.

I couldn't understand why my dog was constantly sniffing around these 2 bitches, he knows them & usually is normal around them, then my friend pointed out one was in season and could see the staining around her "knickers"

I was a little annoyed as I think its unfair in general but added to this she had her cages set up next to the ring, this obviously causing mahem to the males inside the ring.
I know there is no rule against bitches in season at shows but I think it was a bit unfair to bring her to a general open show where she knows males will be in the same classes etc.
Everytime the males were moved they kept heading towards her cage!

I have bitches myself & I know how annoying it is when they come into season around a show but I will miss the show as I know its not fair to others!

Anyways just wanted to get that off my chest! phhheeeewwww feel better now!

I'd never take a bitch in season, but not going into it on here.  There are quite a few posts on this subject if you do a search.

I do agree with you,its so off putting when in the ring and there is a  bitch in season.Whether in the ring or close by.My boys brains tend to be in their loins at this time.I have had to leave my 2 girls home at 2 Champ shows this year.Expensive when you are paying around £23 per dog but better all round in my opinion.
I have read other threads on this topic on C.D and the conscensous of opinion seems to be that most would leave their in season bitches at home.

you would hope that they do leave them at home as most ( not all ) dogs play up when near a bitch in season ( i know mine do ).
I can understand the tempation to overlook it and go to a show as its a lot of money to lose but on the whole most people do leave them at home.
I would think that most know roughly when there bitches are due in so dont enter shows but sometimes they "came in " when you dont expect it so that must make it hard.

I can see both points of view but I think crating an in season bitch so close to a ring is just downright selfish.

I remember being in a group ring with my boy in front of a bitch in full season, I politely asked her owner if she could allow some space between us as my lad was going out of his mind. The lady seemed to think it was all very amusing and did all she could to get as close as possible muttering something about the judge being a friend of hers so she had to be there for a group placing. She continued to ignore my requests to back-off until I warned her that I would not be held responsible for my rampant boys actions and informed her that unless she moved, she would be going home with a pregnant bitch !! It did the trick ! (I would never take a bitch of mine to a show in season).

I agree bitches in heat should be left at home.  They rarely perform their best and put others off.  I think it is worse in a mixed sex class as you can't get awy from them.  Also to put the cage so close to the ring is silly, I bet the judge noticed.

It's rude and inconsiderate to other exhibitors, and it could be dangerous for the bitch, at that time everything is swollen and wide open to any infection going around. I would never do it as I have had my boy totally uncontrollable at shows where clearly someone has had a bitch in season. :-(

Yes i think it is rude and ignorant to show a bitch in season, its not fair on the males or the exhibitors neither, nor is it fair on the female who might not feel at her best at this tme, we always miss shows around season times.
