How many of us let our dogs out in our own back gardens before both jabs and the waiting time is completed? I have always let mine out a couple of days after 1st jab, but would like to hear what others do. Thanks Lois

I always allow my puppies into the back garden before their jabs are complete.(Although they are confined to the patio). I do not like the methods of house training using newspaper or puppy pee pads indoors and find that letting them have access to the out-doors they are housetrained very quickly.

I cannot imagine rearing a litter without them going in the garden let alone once they are of homing age.
This is the thing, both vets I have used have said you MUST not let your dogs out in your own garden until 11 days post 2nd jab, I don't understand why they confuse and frighten new owners!

Mine always go out in my garden and I take them out to new places carrying them as well. Also take them to ringcraft and hydrotherapy where they sit in crates.

My litters first go outside in the garden when they're about 4 weeks old. No other dogs come in my garden so it's safe. By the time they're going to their new homes they spend as much time outside as in, and I'd expect the new owners to keep that up.
Walking out in the streets is a totally different matter.

My pups get out from 3/4 weeks to the garden,
I was always under the impression that private gardens were generally ok?? It's just public areas where unknown dogs and other animals have access that is a problem, isn't it???
how on earth are new owners going to keep large and active pups inside til the jabs??
oh I know, breeders should keep all pups for both jabs and past the waiting time too :) (runs and hides now lol)

My litters of pups go out into my garden aged 3 weeks, and after the *first* vaccination any pup of mine goes to dog club to sit on my lap and watch. Not going into your own garden until fully vaccinated is just about the silliest thing I've ever heard -none of my vets have ever suggested such a thing. Both socialisation and house training would take a huge setback.

when I get a pup I weight up the risk. I do take them out to areas that are not used by lots of dogs. I also carry them in town to get them socialised early, it does help, I wouldnt drean of keeping a pup in till ten days after its second vac. I often go out to do home visits and tell people it is up to them what they do, at the end of the day they hadve to cope with the pup if it hasnt been socialised properly. But when you think of how many people come into the house and would trail Parvo in on the soles of their shoes.Recall it best taught at an early age when the pup is still dependant on you. leave it till a pups is about 3/4 mths old and it is a lot more independant of you. BUT it is a personal choice at the end of the day.

Mine go out in the back garden which is a secure enclosed garden. I do make a mini run out of pen panels but that is more to stop the other dogs knocking them over than anything. Plus when I have a litter, even though they are kept away from the other dogs I wipe the older dogs feet with anti bac to be on the safe side and dont take my walking shoes in the house. I think it is mad not to let puppies out, they love it so much. As for puppies I buy I use the same technique and after the first jab take them on walks by carrying them (usually have a helper with me for the other dogs) to get used to the big wide world.

My only litter so far went out into the garden from about 4 or 5 weeks old, they loved it! After the 1st jab I started taking them to classes just to sit on my lap and watch, I wouldn't take them to the park, but both my clubs require dogs to be vaccinated to attend so I figured it would be safe enough and was good socialisation. :-)
When pup went back for 2nd vac, i asked why they recommended this, and i have been told that is down to foxes and other wild animals getting into back gardens.
hi lois lane
I personally let them out at about 4-5 weeks, nothing else that could potentially be carrying something comes in my garden so don't personally see any problems and they have always been fine. I believe that in the garden it is ok but not in public places ever until they have completed their full vaccination course

Turbo was outside as soon as we got him at 9 weeks and he had been outside at his breeders too, but he was not allowed out the front or any roads etc till a week later after his 2nd jab :)
