Our pup is dark coated and seems to have little white bits all over it's back, I've looked at the skin and it looks a tad flakey, pup is not itching and has been treated with advocote over two weeks ago. We are at the vets next week for 2nd jab, so I will ask the vet what he thinks at this appointment.  Lois

Both my adult dogs went like that last year after I changed their food to a different variety (same brand) I got them on a different food and the dry flaky skin disappeared :-D

One of my black and tan dogs went flaky but that was a change of shampoo, made him flaky whenever he had a bath (not very often) but none of the others were affected.  Changed him back and it went away.  So usually it is a change that causes it either food or shampoo or even what you wash the bedding in.

Depending on the breed, it could be just a breed thing.  You havent mentioned the breed, but I know in my breed, the min pin, the black and tans have a horrid dander problem.  More noticable after exercise and baths.

Something I use that seems to help, is a shampoo specifically made for Black and Tan dogs.  It apparently is supposed to enhance the coat, which it does a bit, but it does more help with the dander.  Also, regular brushings help as well.  A lot of pin people, dont think they need to brush their dogs with the short coats, but it works real well at keeping dander down as well.

Again, I can only go with what works with the pins.  So it may be completely different, if you have a wire coat dog, or a longer haired dog.
