Topic Dog Boards / Health / 1 year old border had diarrheoa and ??? fresh blood in it

some advice please.

our border had sloppy/diarrheoa poos yesterday. this morning she had the same in her cage when i went to get her up and then went outside for more of the same. none since then and well in self.  as i was cleaning up the poo outside (about 3 small piles of it) i noticed that there were a couple of blobs of what looked like fresh blood on all of the piles outside. i absorbed these blobs onto some kitchen paper for closer inspection and then doubted if it was fresh blood or just a rusty/reddish part of the poo it self. i am a nurse, so i have seen fresh blood in human poo, this was not the same. she was straining for a while, just like humans do when there tummy's are upset, so i dont know if she has made herself bleed.

i was all ready to rush her to the vet when she did another poo and it was runny but no blood/rusty in it. i always feed her good quality food like nutro or nature diet (rice and chicken and carrots) but last night i had run out and gave her a tin of pedigree chum for the first time ever, could it be the tinned food that has caused the problem?

she is 100 % ok in herself, running around with her sister who is staying with us at the moment. i will call the vets, but wanted to see if anyone has had this problems before with tinned food. won't be using it again, thats for sure!

If she's well in herself i personally wouldn't call the vets at the weekend. It could well be the different food that has caused her upset tum, and pedigree chum is known for it. The standard procedure is to starve them for 24hours then start her on several small meals of well boiled rice and boiled chicken or something similarly bland. If there's no improvement by Monday I would take her to the vets.

Disclaimer - Of course though should she go downhill call the vet immediately ;-)

For future runny tum situations it's always good to have a tube of this on standby in the fridge.

Hi,
Just out of interest pedigree chum is very rich and can cause upset stomachs!
If she is used to a natural diet this could have caused the diarrheoa.
Hope she is feeling better soon.
