Our nearly 4 month old Welsh Terrier is being fed on Eukanuba Puppy & Junior medium breed as recommended by the breeder.
When we got her at 8 weeks old we were told by the breeder how much to give her 3 times a day.

As she is now growing quite quickly and gaining weight we obviously increased the amount gradually and she still managed to empty her food bowl and appeared to have quite a large tummy on her after each meal.

We then checked with the amount we should be giving her according to Eukanuba for her weight and age and found that the recommended amount was quite a bit more than we were actually giving her.
We tried her on this recommended amount but found that at the mid meal she left quite a lot. Is the manufacturer's recommended amount to be relied upon as it seems to be much greater than we would have thought? I have heard that they tend to overstate the amount required to increase sales!

We don't want to starve her during her growing period but at the same time we don't want to be over feeding her either or throwing good food to waste when she doesn't eat it all.

How should we decide how much to give her?

I give them 10mins to eat all they can.
After that it is taken away until the next meal time.
That way she will soon be getting what she needs, but if she is finishing all each time chances are she does need more but you wont know.

feed manufacturers tend to put the absolute maximum that a very active dog with a very high metabolic rate will need to prevent the
'I'll sue' situation that is so prevelant these days, when someone gets accused of under-feeding or neglecting their dog and trying to say 'well I fed what the makers reccomended'. I think everyone on here will confirm that they feed less than it advises on the bag

I feed mine the recommended amount on the bag :)
