for the last 5 days ive been taking my girl temp and the last 3 days its gone down below 100 ,only just but still gone down !!!
every thing ive been reading is telling me she will go into labour with in 24h ,she is now 59 days this morning her temp is 37.6
but still no labour ,i know it needs to drop to 36.7 ,im just a little confused with the tempreture readings im getting !!!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 07.08.08 11:47 UTC
hi any help here please ,my girl is 58 days and 2 days ago i saw a lump of clear jelly that had come away from her ,today its clear but stringy !!! her temp is 37.6 so its still high and i know it needs to drop to 36.7 ish ,this is her second litter ,the last litter she had she lost this stringy jelly when she was in labour and her temp had droped more than it is now ,shes a english springer spaniel and she looks like shes going to burst ,im sure theres alot of puppies,
ok back to my question ,is it normal to have this stringy jelly now or is she soon to go into labour ,shes very quiet today ,not eating much or drinkinng ,ive been taking her temp for the last few days ,and the highst was 37.9 and lowest was 37.6
thankyou hope this all make sence !
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 07.08.08 13:01 UTC
I had a bitch with stringy stuff ;-) for several days (almost a week) before she went into labour. It's normal so long as it doesn't change colour or starts to smell. I've never taken temperatures so can't help with that though. If she's quieter though I'd keep a close eye on her and don't go too far.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 07.08.08 13:21 UTC
thankyou lindylou ,we havnt left her side for the past 3 days or should i say shes not left me :)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 07.08.08 21:07 UTC
well still nothing happening !!! tomorrows another day !!!
- By RRfriend [se] Date 07.08.08 23:11 UTC
Hi white lilly,
The stringy stuff you're seeing, is the mucus plug. It's there to protect the pups in the uterus, until it's time for delivery. Sometimes you can see this mucus spilling over for quite some time prior to the whelping, sometimes for several weeks. On other bitches you won't notice it until labour starts. As said above, as long as it's clear, and not smelly, it's fine and normal.
Good luck to you and your girl.
Karen

Hi White lilly !  In the last week of the pregnancy the temperature is like a yoyo.  It goes up, it goes down, it goes up, it goes down.  What you are looking for is when it stays down for a considerable period.  I usually take the temperature every 12 hours in the last week.  Don't know how often you take her temperature but I remember with my last bitch when I noticed it had gone down, then I took it around every two hours.  If I noticed it had gone back up again after two hours, then I knew that it wasn't the moment.  When it eventually went down and stayed down, it was down for about 24 hours.   Only then when she is actually giving birth will it go up again.  I would say to you not to worry.  The stringy mucus is completely normally.  And when the temp goes down and stay down, then you will really notice it.  As long as she is happy in herself at the moment, things should be ok.  Good luck and keep us informed.

Hi white lilly
Just been looking over the last temp sheet I did for our bitch when in labour ... did it twice daily from day 57 and it was up and down from 99.8 to 100.4 then on day 58 down to 99.6 and on day 59 & 60 it stayed on 100 then day 61 it dropped to 99 and then up in evening to 100 and then big drop on day 62 to 98.4  and the next day she welped in the evening

Hope this helps??
- By white lilly [gb] Date 08.08.08 09:32 UTC
thankyou to both of you ,this as helped me alot, just one more thing please :)!! ,shes not eating very well at all or drinking much water ,shes on puppy dry and im mixing alittle puppy meat in it to try and get her to eat ,but she not take it ,yesterday she had half a tin of meat and two hands full of dry ,but for her size its not enough at all ,i gave it her tru out the day and theres food down all the time for her ,and fresh water ,she just snifs it and walks away , she is big i think theres alot of pups !!
- By spugsy [it] Date 08.08.08 14:23 UTC
Regarding the eating and  drinking part, it's quite common also at this stage.  She just doesn't have so much room inside to put thefood.  The best thing you can do is to feed her very small amounts often - also 6/8 times per day.  And let her eat whatever she wants to eat to make sure she is getting enough nurishment.  I notice usually at this stage that the ystart to eat much less than usual as they get ready to deliver the pups.  A few days after the birth her appetite should return though and she will probably eat you out of house and home
- By white lilly [gb] Date 08.08.08 14:49 UTC
thankyou ive been starting to get worried about her not eating ,the only thing she will eat is the rolls of meat !!!! :( not good but anything as to be better than nothing right
im starting to feel sick myself ..excitement and worry i think !!!!
thankyou x
- By spugsy [it] Date 08.08.08 18:15 UTC
Yeah the last few days are quite worrying.  If she wants to eat rolls of meat then let her eat them.  She knows better that us what she needs.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 09.08.08 11:32 UTC

My Sophie had her puppies 25th May.  She had the stringy jelly about 3 days before she delivered. She was 61 days when she gave birth.  She wouldnt sit still for the 24 hrs before she had the puppies.  She only panted a few times during the 24 hrs prior to giving birth, where as our other bitch was panting constantly for 24 hrs!  Sophie was going out into the garden from 12-00am until 6.00am about every hour, I was running round with a torch, then at 6.05am while waiting for her to have a wee I noticed a puppy half way out! So I called her in grabbed the towels etc and got stuck in delivering the puppies.  She is tiny, so we were shocked that she had 7!
Good Luck!!!!!
